New Cyberpony - Becky Morris. Please welcome Becky Morris to the Cyberponies.
Becky is a graduate of Marshall High School (1960) and Marshall University. She
tells me that she has retired and moved to Cartersville, Georgia in the north Georgia mountains. She purchased a little 1930's cottage there. Becky says, "
I am Lovin' life. Since it has only been a little less than two years (of retirement),
I am still playing with ballet, house decorating and updating, landscaping/gardening, making new friends, traveling a little,
seeing family more, spending time in the Gym, hanging out at a thoroughbred farm, you know - settling in and having fun. And, the most joyful of all is that my granddaughter was born June first. Yep, life
is good." Becky says that she is looking forward to hearing from her friends. You can contact Becky at her new e-mail address - brooklandbecky@bellsouth.net. Welcome to the Cyberponies Becky.

Joe Is Excited About KINGSTON KEY ISLAND.
Joe McVay purchased a 13-acre island near Beaufort, SC one year ago along with his partners. Joe says, “I just came back from the Island.
It's even more spectacular than I had remembered.” He explains the
project. “A few facts about this beautiful and truly one of a kind island. “There is a 1/2 mile gated, locked, and very PRIVATE causeway to your island...very
few in the world. More than 120 spectacular and large live Oaks. More than 140 palmetto trees (South Carolina palm tree), some as tall as 45 feet. A very large private dock for 8 boats.... 2 electric boat lifts.
9- 1/2 feet of water depth @ low tide. Will easily dock a 60 ft Hatteras,
or Forest Gump's shrimp boat. This is where the shrimp boat shots for Forest
Gump were filmed. Man made lagoon (21/2 acres) that rises and falls with the
tide. Shrimp, Red fish, Crabs, etc. Private
beach at the south end of the island. 8 home sites from 3/4 of an acre to 1.2
acres. Every home site with open view of marsh, river, and some with ocean view. No houses, no lights, no inhabited's can be seen from any home site. 8 mile from beautiful Beaufort, SC. 8 miles from Fripp Island. Hilton Head Island is 20 miles by car and 20 minutes by boat. ALL utilities in place. ALL permits in place.” Joe McVay Jr.

Judy Celebrates Her 65th Birthday. Judy Sheers Swann’s family gave her a surprise birthday party recently for the big
six five. Judy says “The Lord has blessed me over the years. I had a wonderful loving husband for 38 years and now my 4 children treat me like a queen.” Judy. See Judy and her family at Classmate

Barbra Haptonstall Joins Marshall Teaching Staff. My sister, Barbra Haptonstall, has joined Marshall University as Assistant Professor,
Division of Exercise Science, Sport and Recreation, in the College of Education and Human Services. This is Barbra's first full time teaching position at Marshall after teaching there the last 4 years part
time, in addition to teaching some classes in earlier years. She retired from
the Cabell County School System in 2002 after 32 years of service. Barbra has
always been associated with Marshall since her graduation in 1963. She completed
her MS degree in 1976. She connected the MU student athletes with her primary
school students through yearly special events at her school and at Marshall events.
This heightened the interest for her students in athletics and fitness. Many
of her students went on to play sports at the college level. It is fitting now
that Barbra is an official member of the Marshall staff.
Lucy and Al Vacation In France And Italy. Lucy Smith Duba tells me, “Al and I went to France and Italy in July. We had a friend who has a house in LeBrehat, France which is off the coast of Brittany, and we stayed with
him for 2 nights and then we headed to Italy. My husband gave a couple of talks
at an international meeting in Perugia, Italy (Umbria). All the towns are located
on hills surrounding a large valley. We visited Assisi, Todi, Spoleto, and Orvieto
(all old towns on hills). My son had a friend who let us stay in her house for
the 10 days.” Lucy Duba.
Sounds like great fun Lucy.
Dan and Sally Nelson Vacation.
Dan Nelson writes, “Sally & I leave for Bangor, ME on Sept 19 for a week in Bar Harbor &
Lubec, Maine. We were in Acadia Nat. Park about 6 years ago and wanted to go
back. A friend of ours at church was born & raised in Lubec. He gave us a few good traveling tips. We returned two weeks
ago from 10 days in Alaska. We took our two ‘kids’ (Mike - 42 &
Donna - 40), their spouses, and our 2 grandchildren (15 & 10). No cruise
this time...stayed in interior Alaska. We had a great time at Denali & Kenai
Fjords National Parks. When I get a few minutes, I'll send you a few of my wildlife
shots. Attached, for now, is a Nelson Family Photo.” Dan. See Classmate Photos.
Fred and Jean Take A Vacation Trip to the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. “Jean and I just returned from a 2-week vacation trip to the Atlantic Provinces
of Canada. We visited New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Mid-July is the perfect time to visit there.
We especially enjoyed the Tall Ships Festival in Halifax, NS. The sights
were great - also the food, drink, and Celtic music. On the way there, we stopped
at Campobello Island, summer home of FDR & Eleanore Roosevelt. And, on our
return, we visited Hyde Park, NY to see other Roosevelt and Vanderbilt mansions. Many
classmates wrote to say that they had visited these sites and enjoyed reliving the experience.” Fred Charles. See Classmate Photos.

Helpful Health Hints from the HHS Class of 1960. John McDonough got our new web page started with his suggestion and first contribution. He suggested that we communicate our experiences and solutions to health problems
that may be helpful to others. This was followed by contributions from Dr.
Joe Ricketts, Joe McVay, and Paula Whitten Smith. You
can view this web site at http://hhs1960.tripod.com/healthhints/. If you have a helpful health hint, please send it to me for addition
to the web page.
Joe Has Hip Replacement. Joe McVay had a hip replacement on in June. After one month,
he writes, "I feel really good with a whole new outlook on life. I now can walk without a limp and with very little
pain. I expect to have 100% mobility...in 1/3 of the time than for the other way of having a hip replacement.
Make sure that you tell everyone that they are also doing knees with the same minimal incision procedure." Joe also
says, “I urge anyone who is facing hip replacement to check out this procedure before
you allow a surgeon to operate on you. HAVING THE TWO-INCISION PROCEDURE WILL
SAVE THE PATIENT UP TO 2/3 OF THE PAIN AND RECOVERY TIME.” Joe. See the Two-Incision Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgical Procedure at http://www.hipreplacement.com/DePuy/index.html.
Dick And Nancy Move To Lake Lure, NC. Dick Rummell has advised me that he and his wife Nancy (Apple) have moved
from Fort Myers, FL to Lake Lure, NC. They built a new home there and took their
time to customize it to fit their wants and needs. They used a house plan that
John and Betty Sue Haden Kinzer used to build their home in Maryland.
Dick and Nancy both have retired from 20 years in the real estate business in Fort Myers and Naples, Florida. Dick says, "We decided to move to the mountains of North Carolina to be closer to
our daughters and grandchildren. We also will be close to my brother and mother in Lexington, KY. My mother who was a teacher
at Marshall Lab School will be 94 in January and is in great health. We will
live full time in Lake Lure and go to Florida in the winter. Lake Lure is a beautiful
resort community with 2 golf courses and marina. We look forward to a busy but
enjoyable retirement." Dick
News From Bill Anderson.
Please see the following note from Bill Anderson which will up-date you regarding Bill and his family. Congratulations to Bill for receiving the lifetime achievement, Robert Allerton Award
from the National Tropical Botanical Garden.
“Chris and I are well. She is still gainfully employed by UofM, which is good, because that
means I can afford imported beer and decent wine; I've always wanted to be a kept man. I spend some mornings walking in an
attempt to slow the advance of arthritis. The rest of the time I work at the university, continuing my research on tropical
plants. When colleagues bitch and moan about meetings and bureaucracy, I just smile and say, ‘I'm retired.’ Chris and I have an NSF grant for our research, in collaboration with a young colleague
at Harvard, Chuck Davis. Among other projects, we are building a website about the plants we study: http://herbarium.lsa.umich.edu/malpigh/.
In the fall Chris and I will be in Europe for a month to study critical historical specimens, and we hope to fit in the odd
opera when the herbaria are closed. It's tough work, but somebody has to do it. We'll probably go back for another month next
spring; we don't like to be away from Ann Arbor for more than a month at a time. I
hope to spend a few weeks in Colombia about a year from now to complete a project the people in Bogotá recently asked me to
do for them.”
“Yesterday I learned that I am going to receive this year's Robert Allerton Award from the
National Tropical Botanical Garden, which is situated on Kauai. That is a lifetime achievement award for people in tropical
plant systematics. The Garden gives it every two years, and it's quite prestigious, so I appreciate the recognition. Poor
Chris was all set to pack her grass skirt and jet off to the Islands for the presentation, but it turns out that the show
will be at the Missouri Botanical Garden in October, so instead of frolicking under palm trees in Hawaii we'll be making nice
with trustees in the Palm House in St. Louis. It's just as well, though; I need a few days in the herbarium at Missouri to
study some of their specimens from Colombia. Our daughter Rebecca is an artist
in San Francisco. Her day job is with a small company that does custom metal work for rich people. Otherwise she makes big things out of metal; as a member of the Flaming Lotus Girls she has helped make
enormous fire art installations for Burning Man, and nowadays she and a partner are making metal firepits modeled on stylized
flowers for the Park Service to install on the beach in San Francisco. How did we hatch an artist? Well, I guess she does
resemble us in her determination to do her own thing, and not worry about what the rest of the world thinks about it. We like
San Francisco, so it's good to have an excuse to visit there from time to time.”
