Pony News January - June, 2008

Recent news from your HHS1960 classmates.   January - June, 2008

Pony News.  I am sorry that the Pony News is so late again.  For every month that I delay in publishing a new version of our web site, there is another month of news to summarize.  Anyway, you will find items below covering the first six months of 2008.  I hope that you enjoy the news from your classmates and friends of Huntington High School Class of 1960.  Fred Charles

Yahoo Groups Mail.  Many of you have agreed to sign on to Yahoo Groups to aid me in sending group e-mails.  Actually, this will become a second web site for us.  In addition to receiving group mail, each member will be able to send mail to the whole group without having to keep a big e-mail list.  With this freedom, comes responsibility to write messages that you ALL will enjoy.

My guidelines for content are the following subjects: You and Your Family; Classmate Information; HHS; Huntington; West Virginia; Health; Music; Web Sites; and other interests that pertain to our common heritage and history.  Please do not send any forwarded e-mails or chain letters.  Create them yourselves.  You may reply to messages, of course.  Please do not send any political or religious e-mail.  These only cause problems, even if they are very minor in nature (believe me).  We don’t need jokes either.  What is funny to some is not at all funny to others.  I have tried to follow these guidelines and have received very little negative feedback as a result.  As of July 1st, we have over 150 members.  So, I will try to begin the Yahoo Groups mail very soon.  Fred Charles

New Cyberpony - Sharon Martin Hodges.  I just found Sharon Martin Hodges in Huntington.  She had been "missing" there for many years.  Recently, Sharon signed up on the Classmates web site, which helped me find her.  After graduating from HHS in 1960, Sharon applied to the Nursing School at St. Mary's Hospital and obtained her degree.  She then worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's off and on for 25-1/2 years.  She retired 3 years ago.  Sharon has been divorced for many years, after 3 marriages.  She has 3 daughters and one granddaughter.  She worked with cancer patients at St. Mary's and had training in the area of death and dying.  As a result, she continues to help others who have special needs through her church - 7th Avenue Baptist Church.  Sharon enjoys writing poetry, using her computer, playing with her granddaughter, and buying on e-bay.  Please welcome Sharon to the Cyberponies.  Her e-mail address is hodges_sharon@yahoo.com.  See Classmate Photos.

New Cyberpony - Pam Morlock Rawn.  Please welcome Pam Morlock Rawn to the Cyberponies.  Pam, and her husband Van Rawn (HHS1959), live in Huntington, WV.  They both are graduates of Marshall University.  Pam and Van have been married 43 years and have three sons.  They also have five grandchildren (3 boys and 2 girls).  Pam enjoys needlepoint and reading.  Since Van retired 2 years ago, Pam says, "We travel visiting family and doing pretty much as we please."  You may also remember that Pam is Senior Class Secretary of our HHS Class of 1960.  Pam's e-mail address is peaches249@verizon.net

Classmate - Sharon Elaine Moncer James.  I am sorry to inform you of the passing of another classmate - Sharon Moncer James.  The following obituary is from the Herald-Dispatch.  Sharon passed away suddenly on April 23, 2008 as a result of a blood clot being dislodged from her leg.  I spoke to her sister, Orelaine Moncer Elkins (HHS'62) who provided some details.  She said that Sharon was divorced and had one daughter.  She moved back to Huntington, from Texas, about 10 years ago and lived with her mother on Washington Avenue.  Unfortunately, Sharon was one of our missing classmates that we were not able to catch up to.

SHARON ELAINE JAMES, 66, of Huntington died Wednesday (April 23, 2008) at home. She was an office manager in the steel industry. A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Reger Funeral Home.

Bill Angel - Friend of the HHS Class of 1960.  Bill Angel, a longtime friend of our class, passed away on April 10, 2008 in Vienna, Austria.  Bill had suffered for over a year with a degenerative muscular illness.  He was 65 years old.  He left his wife Mona.  Bill went to Cammack Elementary and Cammack Junior Hi School with many of our classmates.  He graduated from high school in Michigan and went on to graduate from Washington and Lee University where he played football.  Bill and Mona moved from New York to Vienna, Austria in 2001, after a 24-year career at the United Nations.  Bill became the Secretary General for the International Council on National Youth Policy in Vienna, a position that he held until his passing.  Bill kept in touch with many of his close friends from his days in Huntington even though he lived so far away.  He is greatly missed by all.

Nancy Sellards Wheeler and Friends.  See Classmate Photos for a photo of Nancy Sellards Wheeler, with friends from our class, taken during a visit in December 2007.  As you may know, Nancy has lived in The Woodlands, in Huntington, for many years due to having Multiple Sclerosis.  Nancy enjoys visits like this one and she is very alert.  She recognizes her visitors and understands the conversation although she can only communicate with her smile.  Visiting Nancy are:  Pam Morlock Rawn, Alfreda Corradi Leef, Judy Browning Clark, Peggy Simmons Wilmink, and Susan Chetwin Brandon.

Connie Ewing Cook - Promotion at University of Michigan.  Connie Ewing Cook has been promoted to the position of Associate Vice Provost at the University of Michigan (effective June, 2006).  See the following announcement:  http://www.ur.umich.edu/0506/Jun12_06/26.shtml.  Connie also continues to lead the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching as its Executive Director.  See the department's web page, which also provides Connie's duties and many accomplishments:  http://www.crlt.umich.edu/aboutcrlt/crltstaff.html.  See Classmate Photos.  Congratulations to Connie for her many successes.  Connie also is very happy to tell me, "Both of my children produced grandchildren for us in 2007 - a very good thing!"  Connie Ewing Cook

News From Nancy DeJournett Phelps.  Nancy writes, "Theoretically, I am retired.  I officially took early retirement after being a counselor at Tallahassee Community College. However, last summer, some of my old friends from the Fla. Dept. of Education (where I used to work) asked me if I would come back part-time to do some grant management. The state had appropriated a large amount of money to increase the number of people trained in certain critical areas. So I am managing the money to train additional health care workers. Believe me, I am interested in making sure there are sufficient health care workers in Florida!! The job has been good for me overall and I have particularly enjoyed connecting with many old friends. However, it has certainly been more than part-time.  Currently, our family is doing extremely well. We have thoroughly enjoyed our two grandchildren who live here in Tallahassee and do major grandparent duty. Last fall, we were blessed with a sudden increase in the grandchildren count - our son and daughter-in-law in Atlanta had twins!! Even though they were very premature, they are doing fine now but it is so hard not to be in the same city with them.  I have also tried to keep my hand in a few community activities. I am on the Board for the local telephone counseling and referral service where I had served as a counselor a number of years ago. Also, I continue to be active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW).  My husband, Jerry, continues to travel with his job with the Florida Bar and after this summer, I am sure I will resume traveling with him more frequently after my job ends. He is also chair of a credit union board and that has given us several wonderful travel opportunities to various conferences. One was to their world congress in Rome and another one involved a cruise.  When I read your news from various people, I have often thought about all our old gang and marvel at the contributions that our old HHS class have made collectively around the country. There must have been some good things happening at HHS and in Huntington to produce so many productive, fine adults. Life seems so vastly different now. We probably all worry about the state of our country and what our grandchildren will face. It is so critical for us all to stay engaged with local and national politics.  Fred, stay in touch and keep those messages coming!!"  Nancy DeJournett Phelps

Carolyn Announces Engagement.  Carolyn Thomas Schenck is engaged to be married to her long-time beau Dr. Barney Willens.  See Classmate Photos.  Carolyn writes, “Barney and I are officially engaged.  He continues to work as a Radiologist in Columbia while remodeling his home here in Camden.  We have not set a date.  Maybe now that I am retired, I will have time to work on those plans! “  Oh yes, more news.  Carolyn is also retiring.  “I have just retired with 31 years of service to the public schools as a Speech/Language Pathologist.  I will continue to work part time as a Home Health Therapist for the hospital here in Camden.  I just don't think I could ever Not work or stay home full-time.  I do look forward to the stress reduction and freedom to choose my own hours.”  Carolyn Thomas Schenck

The West Virginia Kids Count Fund - Margie Fox Hale, Executive Director.  See the following web site for The West Virginia Kids Count Fund.  Margie Fox Hale is the Executive Director.  She has held that position since the organization's inception in 1990.  The web site tells about Margie's extensive accomplishments during her "32-year career as one of the state's leading child advocates."  http://www.wvkidscountfund.org/about-staff.php.  Congratulations to Margie for her many successes.  See Classmate Photos.

Visionary Wellman Sparked Cisco.  Earlier this year, Investor's Business Daily had a very nice article about Selby Wellman (HHS'59), husband of Donna Bias Wellman.  It told about his career successes, difficulties, plus his family and community involvement.  Donna and Selby, both Marshall University graduates, have been very generous to the Huntington community, especially at Marshall where they now have a dormitory named in their honor.  Selby also has received a very nice award from the National Association of State Boards of Education.  It was their "2007 Friend of Education Award".  Selby was chosen for his "Significant and Enduring Contributions to Education".  This is quite an honor for Selby and for West Virginia.  Congratulations are in order for both Selby and Donna.

Larry is Retiring.  Larry Salyers (HHS'59), husband of Sandy York Salyers, has announced his retirement as Director of the Huntington Tri-State Airport.  Please join me in wishing Larry and Sandy a well deserved retirement.  Below is a link to the Herald-Dispatch article.  http://www.herald-dispatch.com/homepage/x1924855751/Salyers-to-retire-from-Tri-State-Airport

How to Survive a Heart Attack When Alone.  See Helpful Health Hints for the "Cough CPR" procedure.  It was sent by John Tweel.  George Hale tells me that he teaches this to his anatomy students.  John and I want you to know that the medical communities have backed off from any support of this "Cough CPR" procedure even though it was highly published several years ago.  They say to immediately take aspirin, and call 911.   Please read all of the articles referenced to see a lot of good information on the subject.

Dick and Dixie Survive Tornado.  Dick Wilson writes, "We just got back from our place in KS and what a surprise we got in the same tornado twice in the same day, we drove into it, then 30 minutes later it hit the edge of our town."  Dick Wilson

John will Travel to Europe.  John Hampton tells me, "I finagled a detail to Holland and Germany in August in conjunction with a joint international tax group [Holland, Germany, Australia, England, Japan] looking into the Internet and abusive tax shelters. Holland and Germany have used the Internet successfully to detect tax fraud on International corporations. We're looking at how they do this to determine if we can adapt these methods in the US to detect tax fraud in International companies operating in the US. I'm looking forward to it, as I have not been back to Europe since I was stationed in Munich in the Army years ago. When I was in the Army during the Viet Nam conflict tears, I bounced back and forth between RVN & Germany for over 3 years. I was stationed in Munich, Nurnburg, and Stuttgart. I just loved Europe and I'm looking forward to going back. I plan to retire 1/3/2009 - I'm looking forward to that as well.  John Hampton

Haiden Weaver is a Big Hit.  See Classmate Photos for a picture of Bill Weaver's granddaughter Haiden with her mother Heather and Senator Hillary Clinton.  Haiden was a big hit at Lynn's Cafe during the Presidential Primaries in Kentucky.

Donna and Pete Make a Move.  Pete and Donna Darbes McGehee have moved to Cypress, TX, near Houston.  Donna says, "We are going from a townhouse back to a 2-story home. We like the yard and the room."  Donna Darbes McGehee

Beckie and Brit Move to The Villages.  Becky Hazelett Killinger writes, "Brit and I have both retired and moved to Florida.  We visited a place called The Villages last January for five days.  We bought a house and the third day we were here, went home and started packing, listed our house in Ohio and sold it in four days!  Moved to The Villages on March 15, 2008.  It is an Adult Life Style Golf Cart Community and we love it here.  You must be 55 or older to purchase property here.  If you want to see what its all about, can go 'thevillages.com' for a preview.  Beckie Hazelett Killinger

Gathering in Gainesville, GA.  Please see Classmate Photos for a recent photo taken at Charlie and Jane Beckett Bradley's home in Gainesville, GA.  You will see long time friends and gathering for the weekend.  See Jane Beckett Bradley, Charley Bradley, Barney Willens, Carolyn Thomas Schenck, Garland Peoples Myers, and Chip Myers.  Thanks to Jane for the wonderful photo.  Also, the rhododendrons were spectacular.

Tom is Mending.  Tom Melton recently fell and dislocated his shoulder.  Tom says, “Didn't fall like in the old days, when we were quicker and lighter.  As we used to say, bummer.”  Tom Melton

Linda’s Mother Moves to New York.  Linda Frankel moved her mother from Florida to New York City in February.  She lives in “an independent living center on 46th Street, on the edge of the theater district”, Linda tells me.  The location is close to Linda where she can help her much better.  Mrs. Frankel is doing well.  Linda and her mother have many friends and extended family members in New York.  Linda writes, “I did go to LA last week for a family reunion with Mother.  We both had a wonderful time, and the weather was hot but dry – climate I love.  I like the desert.  Wasn’t sure she could make it, but she did – with flying colors!”  Linda Frankel

Bob and Pauline Survive Heat Wave.  Bob Lykins writes from California,  “We have been suffering a recent heat wave and on Friday past, it was 114 on our patio.  Blessed be the air conditioner!”  Bob Lykins

Chuck Gets a New Knee.  Chuck Kinder says, “We are staying pretty close to home this summer. I had a total knee replacement rather recently & am just not mobile enough to deal with much traveling. On the other hand, we have hordes of visitors scheduled to descend upon us all summer. But as aging San Francisco Commune Days hippies we are used to a lot of company.”  Chuck Kinder

Goodbye Little Red Corvair.  I am sorry to hear that David Reeder had a traffic accident and totaled his little red 1963 Corvair convertible.  David says that he plans to replace it with a new toy and is looking at a 1975 Dodge Dart Swinger 2 door coupe.  Good luck David

Fun Puzzles.  Here is a really fun site recommended by Carol Mendelson Ellegant.  Carol says, "Please pass this site on to everyone. This is a convenient and entertaining site for anyone who wants to exercise your brain doing

jigsaw puzzles. You also don't need to clutter the dining room table with your own."  http://www.jigzone.com/puzzles/daily-jigsaw.  Carol Mendelson Ellegant.

Paula Agrees.  Paula Whitten Smith adds, "I can tell you as a teacher that jigsaw puzzles are a great learning activity for elementary age children. They help develop spacial perception, organizational skills, color identification, eye-hand coordination, problem solving, as well as patience and perseverance. If it is sometimes hard for our Cyberponies grandparents to find things for visiting grandchildren to do, the online puzzles would be a great choice.  Paula Whitten Smith

Michael's New Grandson - Isaac Asher Warner.  Join with me to congratulate Michael Lerner for the arrival of little Isaac Asher Warner.  See Classmate Photos.  The proud grandfather says, "I became a grandfather for the 5th and probably final time.  Isaac Asher Warner, son of my daughter Shayna and Seth and brother of Simon was born on Monday, June 9 and weighed in @7lb, 4 oz and 21" long.  Going well and Simon will soon know what it means for his world to change big time!"  Michael Lerner

George is Expecting.  George Hale writes, "Finally!  On this Father's day I learned that, for the first time, I am going to be a grandfather.  The little one is expected on January 21, 2009.  My daughter will be 39 next month so, we are on pins and needles on this one.”  George Hale.

Gary Lyons Surgery.  On June 9, 2008, Gary Lyons had successful open-heart triple bypass surgery.  His wife Kathy relates, " We feel very fortunate that the minor heart attack came first, without any damage to the heart, but was painful enough to get him into the emergency room."  Best of luck to Gary for his complete recovery.  Kathy provided an up-date 10 days after surgery.  "Gary came home from the hospital on Friday, the 13th, a lucky day, and is doing very well.  We have a two story home and the bedrooms, full bath and his den are upstairs, it's 13 (straight up) steps, no problem from the get go for Gary.  His strength is coming back though he is not allowed to drive for at least 6-8 wks, and cannot go back to his part time job as a Shuttle Driver at the Auto Dealership for approx. 5 mo.  I'm sure this will be most difficult for him.  You can only watch so much television, read, and work "find a word puzzles".  Thank goodness our weather is such that he is able to go out onto the decks and enjoy the outdoors and the sunshine.  Walking Bosco, our little 3 1/2 year old rescue American Eskimo doggy will be a possibility in a couple of weeks, he looks forward to that.  Lots of follow-up Doctor visits coming up and our house looks like a pharmacy with all of the pills he has to take, he went from 0 medication to approximately 12 or 13 a day, but that too will cease in time.  He truly is doing remarkably well and we expect nothing less than a full recovery.  Thanks to all for the prayers, there is such a positive power in prayer.  Our Heavenly Father hears them all.  Praise the Lord!  Kathy Lyons

News from Jenny.  Jenny Deacon Daniels provides a great family history.  "I married Bill Daniels 43 years ago this week. Bill went to Vinson, Marshall, and received his Medical degree from MCV. He spent three years in the Army in Germany and worked with his father in Westmoreland for three years in General Practice. He then specialized in Emergency Medicine at Cabell Huntington Hospital and St.Marys for 24 years.  I graduated from Marshall with a BS in Medical Technology.  When we came back from Germany with two kids and soon had a third, I did volunteer work in the community. I helped start what became the WV Poison Center and worked to start the Huntington Ronald McDonald House. My last work was paid as the Executive Director of Branches, the domestic violence program for Huntington and the surrounding five counties. It was interesting to be the face and voice for domestic violence in the area. Every so often, I had to stop and tell folk that good men did exist and I had a perfectly lovely husband!

Bill and I are both retired but always busy it seems. We moved to South Central Pennsylvania about 5 years ago. We live on two acres of land, which includes a 1/4-acre pond, and is bordered by Conococheague Creek. (It is easier to pronounce if you learn how it sounds before you see it spelled.)  It is a cold-water trout stream, which is stocked several times in the Spring. We have the pond stocked and keep rods for our grandchildren. Anyone is welcome to fish if they don't mind using a Sponge Bob or Superman fishing rod.

All of our children went to Miller, Cammack, and HHS. Our youngest child, Ann, is a dentist in nearby Chambersburg and her husband, Tim, manages her practice. We are close enough to be helpful and enjoy their three children but far enough away to stay out of their hair. Our middle child, Katie, is an artist and lives in New York City with her husband and two children so we are also closer to her. Our son, David, lives in Tallahassee. He and his wife are friends with Sherry O'Shay Wallace's daughter, Shelly and her family. Small world.

I garden - vegetables and flowers - and am planting several types of unusual fruiting vines and shrubs. I believe my yard should feed me. It is a labor of love because our land has at some time been a river. Two inches below the grass the round river rocks begin. It takes me about an hour to dig a hole big enough for a quart size plant. We have used the extra rock to build a "flood wall" along the creek. The house has survived several floods over the past forty years with the water around the house but not in it. It does bring the saying "if the creek don't rise" to life.

Bill is busy golfing and taking classes about the Civil War. If anyone is in the area, he would be happy to act as guide for an afternoon at Gettysburg. We are about 20 miles from the battlefield.   He says that this is how he envisioned retirement. We have been collecting medical antiques for about 30 years and have a pretty good museum. As you can see, this was a good move for us and life is good."  Jenny Deacon Daniels

Judith Is Feeling Much Better.  Judith Benson Majher has recently gone through an operation to remove her gall bladder.  She is feeling much better now.  She and husband Lefty Majher (HHS’57) enjoy living in Florida.

Don and Donna Purchase Kannapolis Mill Houses.  Don Blake writes, “I'm working my way to retiring. Last year my business partner and I merged our distribution business with a large logistics company that we have done a lot of business with in the past and, as a result through contractual agreement, I will be with them for seven more months. Donna and I just purchased three mill houses on the same street in Kannapolis about 2 miles from the new research campus being built at the old Cannon Mills site. I don't know if you have seen or heard about this? Unbelievable. Our plan after a little updating is to live in one and use the others for a little income. We lived in Concord for 15 years and still have children, grandchildren and many friends there.”  Don Blake

Linda Keeps Young.  Linda Adkins Nelson says, “I'm busy keeping up with my two oldest granddaughters (8 and 10) three days a week until school starts back in Aug.  They keep me young! (Ha)  Took a trip to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard the last week of May and a Disney Cruise in April with family to St. Martin, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas.”  Linda Adkins Nelson

Larry and Dee Are Busy.  Larry Clark reports, “All is well here...playing golf a couple times a week and "pickleball" on Mondays.  Getting to Huntington about every other month.  Mother is still enjoying The Woodlands.  Dee got us a dog after we got back from Hawaii in March!  Thinking about a fall cruise or road trip again to New England.”  Larry Clark

Classmates Visit in Richmond.  Joe McVay writes about his recent visit with Billy and Robin Garner in Richmond, VA.  "I just got home from a great 4 days with Billy and Robin "Sweetie Pie" Garner.....Billy "Smokehouse" Garner is a celebrity at the Heritage Country Club....EVERYONE knows Smokehouse.....The members think so much of Billy that they put the only plaque that has ever been allowed on the wall of the men's grill for the Smokehouse Cup, in honor of Smokehouse....Every week he handles all of the tee times and grouping for the Saturday and Sunday group known as the Smokehouse Gang....That is no easy job........Once a year Smokehouse has a tournament and he appoints two captains...They take turns picking their teams ...Just like when we played football in the Aline Fallon's field....That was always a very humiliating experience because if you weren't a captain you had to stand in line while Natalie Pace (Nelson's younger sister) was picked first EVERYTIME!........Then they have a dinner with their wife's and Smokehouse gives out the prizes and the winning Captain get his name put on the Smokehouse Cup plaque in the Men's Grill.... It didn't matter where we went on the course, in the clubhouse or at the dance EVERY ONE speaks to and wants to talk with Smokehouse.... Billy and I have been close friends for 60 years this coming September as he would tell everyone when he would introduce me.... That's when we started the first grade with our teacher Miss Sensene at Miller.... Billy is the kindest, and most caring friend anyone could have... I'm very fortunate to be know around the Hermitage Country Club as Smokehouse's friend of 60 years... When he took me to the airport Sunday morning (31.2 miles and $6.63 in gas) and we said good bye, he held out his hand and I grabbed him and gave him a big hug and he said as he quickly pulled away from me, "Don't do that, real men don't hug"..... Thanks Billy for our 60 years of friendship and another great time with you, Smokehouse and Sweetie Pie in HOT Richmond VA....  Joe McVay

Mark and Pat Travel to Huntington for his Father's Funeral.  Mark Artis writes, "I just got back from one of the best trips of my life, even though it was to bury my dad.  As much as I may not show it out in this ole world...I am still from West Virginia and dam don't mind it one bit.   It was good to see those hills once again and enjoy the short time that we had while there. Pat especially enjoyed seeing the places and the faces. We are planning another trip 'home' ASAP. Oh yea, we had a very nice service with Ernie from the funeral home in charge. Ernie was one of my dad's friends and was able to tell some good stories about him. Ernie sang a couple of songs that my dad requested and it all went well. Many folks were able to get up and speak about ole Don and everyone had a good chuckle about him 'being late for his own funeral'....  The ole man would have been very pissed about it...  lol.  (He arrived three days later)  Jim Graley came by and we had a chance to catch up on a lot of things. Kathy Heiner and her husband, Gary Hood was there also. Kathy and my sis, Donna were classmates at Cammack and HHS. Gary and I had a good visit and were able to talk about some of the old days in the car scene that was happening around the area when we were in school.  All in all it was a nice service and good to see so many of dad's friends and neighbors from the old homeplace on Enslow Blvd there."  Mark Artis

Law School Graduation for Sarah Melton.  Proud Dad, Tom Melton, wrote to tell me that his daughter, Sarah is graduating from law school in May.  He says, "I am looking forward to my daughter Sarah's graduation from law school in May. She has a job as a clerk to a Judge in Anchorage, and is very happy about it. A clerkship for a judge, just out of law school, is a real plus on her resume for a later "real" job. She has designs on NOAA on the national level, after the Republicans are gone.  My daughter is an enviro freak, and graduates from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Ore., the 2nd highest rated in the list of environmental law schools in US. She has an undergraduate degree from CU (Colo) in Environmental Science, with a minor in Geology, and worked for 6 months on the staff of a geology oil & gas journal in Boulder, and then 6 months with an oil and gas firm here in Denver. Then to law school to save the land, the salmon, Native Americans, and you and me, from our excesses." Tom Melton.  Congratulations to Sarah and Tom.

Bob and Sylvia Max Brammer - Marshall Yeager Scholars.  Please see Classmate Photos for a photo of Bob and Sylvia Max Brammer taken recently at a dinner for the Marshall Yeager Scholars Board members.  Bob and Sylvia have supported the Yeager Scholars for many years - I think from the inception.  The Class of 2008 was named in their honor.  The following link tells about the Yeager Scholars.

North Carolina Classmates Visit.  In mid-March, Terry Brodof and I took a short trip across North Carolina from our homes in Charlotte, to visit a few Huntington High School friends.  Yes, Jean and Sandy let us out of their sight for a few days - a real risky venture.  We headed for the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Terry and I enjoyed talking about our planned visits and everything else under the sun as we drove.  Especially those good old days at HHS.  We passed Greensboro, Durham, and headed for Rocky Mount for lunch.  Well, we missed a road or two and ended up on a two-lane road (Rt 33) in a town called Tarboro.  There, we found a great place for lunch.  Pickup trucks were lined up outside showing the acceptance of this place by the locals.  The 33 Grill and Oyster Bar was fantastic.  The fish and oysters couldn't be beat plus the owner and waiter couldn't have been more friendly.  They took our photo (see Classmate Photos) and handed out advertising gifts as we left.  It was a good start for our trip.

We made it to Southern Shores by late afternoon and were greeted by Paul (Lyn) Ford, Helen, and their dog Stockie at their beautiful home.  They built their home, viewing the Albemarle Sound side of the Outer Banks, several years ago.  We had a great evening and talked into the night.  The next morning, Paul and Helen gave us a grand tour of the area including visits to each of their pizza restaurants.  Paul and Helen (see their photo) moved to the Outer Banks in the 1980's and built a local business.  They own 3 pizza restaurants in Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Corolla, NC plus a small shopping plaza.  You can view their pizza shops at their web site - http://www.pizzazzpizza.net/.  Helen also is a realtor who has brokered many great sales over the years in this growing vacation paradise.  Terry and I enjoyed the visit and thank Paul and Helen for their terrific hospitality.

The next day, we drove across the lowlands of NC along the Pamlico Sound through Washington and arrived in New Bern, NC in the late afternoon.  There, we were greeted by Rhys Evans.  Rhys moved to New Bern last year after visiting this quaint city on his boat.  He lives on his beautiful twin-diesel cabin cruiser at Bridge Pointe Marina.  See the Classmate Photos for a photo with Rhys and Terry.  You can see the marina in this web site - http://www.bridgepointehotel.com/.  Rhys makes friends quickly and he has joined several organizations there already.  It seems that everyone in town knows Rhys and his cell phone is ringing often with invites to go fishing, etc.  We spent the evening with Rhys and, once again, we had plenty to talk about, especially all of those friends from HHS.  He gave us a grand tour of New Bern.  Rhys is an expert in boating and has his captain's license.  He finds plenty of part-time work training new owners of these large boats how to handle and maintain them.  He is certainly in the right place for this with one boat manufacturer within sight.  It was great seeing Rhys and we thank him for the great visit.

The next morning we headed south along the North Carolina coast toward Hampstead, NC, arriving around noon.  We were invited to the home of Paul and Karen Harrison.  It was great to see Paul, after many years, and to meet Karen for the first time.  See their Classmate Photos for a photo of Paul and Karen.  Paul and Karen built a new retirement home in Hampstead, at the Castle Bay Golf Club, two years ago.  The 8th green is in view of their back porch and patio.  Here is a link to the golf course - http://www.castlebaycc.com/.  Paul and Karen met in Pittsburgh, PA where she was a kindergarten teacher and he was on his first job with Abbott Laboratories as the Hospital Rep. selling drug / drug delivery systems in the Pittsburgh area.  They have been married 35 years.  They moved to several cities as Paul worked for a number of companies in the medical field introducing new technologies (such as electronic thermometers and surgical lasers) to the health care market.  When their two children were grown, Karen began to use her teaching talent once again at Nordstrom Inc. as Manager of Customer Service and Training.  After considering several places to retire, they picked the coast of North Carolina.  They both keep pretty busy and enjoy their new community and many new friends.  Paul has obtained his real estate license and hopes to work in the commercial side of this business.  We spent the afternoon with Paul and Karen reviewing "the years gone by" and our many common connections.  Paul took us on a tour of the surrounding area including Topsail Beach, which is nearby.  This is another great vacation place with wonderful beaches.  Once again, Terry and I had a great visit and would like to thank Paul and Karen for the fun that we all enjoyed.

We headed off to Wilmington for the evening and found a nice restaurant on the Riverwalk.  This was in the historic part of town.  For a view of Historic Wilmington, see - http://www.wilmingtondowntown.com/profile.html.  The next morning we headed back across North Carolina through Rockingham and Monroe arriving in Charlotte in early afternoon.  I was surprised how the roads have improved in recent years with many more 4-lane sections and bypasses around the small towns.  We reviewed our visit, joked, and laughed, and compared the events that we had recently experienced, as we traveled.  Terry and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our trip and the time spent with our HHS classmates and their spouses and friends.  It was a very special week and one that we expect to do again in the future - possibly in your town.  Terry Brodof and Fred Charles

Joe’s Canadian Cottage.  Dr. Joe Ricketts is able to break away from work several times a year to vacation at his Canadian Cottage.  It is located at Manitoulin Island.  He says, “Leaving in a week, and again for Labor Day.  Been traveling there for more than 50 years.  About ten years ago, Bobby and Sylvia Brammer became neighbors (on the island).  Manitoulin Island is the world's largest freshwater island.  Our cottages/homes are about 20 miles apart.  Bob and Sylvia's is on the south shore of the island, on Lake Huron water.  Our place is on Lake Manitou, which is 20 miles long and ten miles wide in the middle of the island.  Our lake is the largest freshwater lake, on a freshwater island (for a bit of trivia).  We were up there for Memorial Day, and I thought it might snow while were there.  They said the Ice was piled up over 8 feet high on the shore in March.”  Joe Ricketts

Hot Metal Bridge.  Chuck Kinder helps students at The University of Pittsburgh to create their online literary magazine.  Chuck writes, "HOT METAL BRIDGE, the online literary magazine that the Pitt MFA students edit, just came out, & I thought I would share it with some of my friends with a literary bent.  Please find the included Press Release with the proper link - www.hotmetalbridge.org.    There really is some good writing/reading here. The students did a great job."  Chuck Kinder

Don and Paula Support Local Park.  Paula Whitten Smith writes, "In 2004 our city did not pass a park maintenance levy so there was no summer care for the city parks. Don decided to take on the park across from our home. He planned on help from church members but that didn't last long. I tried to tell him that people are just too busy and the size of the area required big equipment. The world is full of visionaries and facilitators. Don is of the first persuasion. He bought a tractor/mower and we paid for the cost of every improvement. This included paint, benches, flowers, etc. The city now supplies him with gasoline for the mowers. I used to help him but I can't leave mother long enough to do much now. I do take care of one flower box. Cleaning public restrooms does wonders for one's sense of self-importance. We can't supply paper towels and the toilet paper is padlocked. Both will be stuffed in the toilets. The light bulbs stay broken. When both basketball nets were up it drew a group of young men with language to fry one's ears. They had no regard for the small children at all. When they ripped the backboards down we left them down. When they try to play loud music/rap the neighbors will call the police immediately. The park commissioner thinks Don is great and so do our neighbors.  Mansfield just elected a new mayor so the commissioner might be replaced with someone who will care nothing about Don's work. The city workers are so frustrating. They sit in their trucks, smoke, drink coffee and leave. Then they wonder why a park tax levy won't pass. Concerning the issue of safety, I pray for Don every time he goes over to the park to work. We can't spend our lives in fear."  Paula Whitten Smith.  Congratulations to Don and Paula for the work that they do in their community.

Mary Shep Mann Honored - Joe McVay's Aunt.  Joe's 102-year-old aunt, Mary Shep Mann, has been inducted into the inaugural class of the West Virginia Voter Hall of Fame.  Mrs. Mann lives in Huntington at the Woodlands Retirement Community.  Joe says that many of you will remember this incredible woman.  The Herald-Dispatch article relates the following about Mrs. Shep Mann.  The West Virginia Voter Hall of Fame was created in September 2007 to recognize those who have voted in every state general election for 50 consecutive years.  Mann, however, has been voting since the 1920s. After going through the voting records, County Clerk Karen Cole nominated Mann for her dedicated service.  Mann has lived through several important steps in voting history, including women's suffrage in 1920 and changing the voting age to 18 in 1971.  Mann was 15 when the 19th Amendment gave her the right to vote. Since becoming old enough to vote in 1926, she has made it a point to always take part in the democratic process.  "Voting is not only a privilege, but it's an honor," Mann said at her recognition at the Woodlands Retirement Community. "I don't have patience for people who don't vote."  Ireland said Mann serves as a model for younger generations to take part in politics and continually vote.

Michael Turns 65.  Michael Lerner sent photos of his 65th birthday party.  See Classmate Photos.

Who's The Youngest Classmate?  I always thought that Michael Lerner was the youngest in our class.  He must have been double promoted.  Right?  Well, a number of you have set me straight.  Here are the replies.  Anita Herbert Oller is the youngest classmate.  At least six of you were born in 1943.

1. Anita Herbert Oller - May 26, 1943

2. Jim Harper - May 16, 1943

3. Jane Carnes Tiller - April 7, 1943

4. Laura White Barnett - March 27, 1943

5. John Tweel - January 31, 1943

6. Michael Lerner - January 29, 1943

Jane's Story from School.  Please see the interesting story from Jane Carnes Tiller.  Jane, who was also double promoted, came in 3rd youngest in our class.  Here's her story.  "I moved up a grade the beginning of the 6th.  We had moved from Logan County to Lincoln County and into a one-room schoolhouse my grandfather built - Carnes Elementary, and they had only 16 students in the   1st-8th grades.  I was the only 6th grader so they moved me up to the next level.  Oh yes, the school was scheduled to close that year because there were less than 20 students (needed to keep it open).  WELL with the large family of ours, the school stayed open five more years.  I joined HHS in November of our junior year (1958).  There was a Red Cross Assembly that morning and Bill Tiller was singing.  I thought, 'I've got to meet that guy.'  We were married 2/12/61.  Will be celebrating our 47th next week.  Loved every minute of it.  God has been GOOD!"  Jane Carnes Tiller.  Happy Anniversary to Jane and Bill.

Dan and Sally Enjoy Retirement.  Dan Nelson writes, "To answer your latest questions, Sally & I are doing just great.  We were fortunate enough to retire at 55 and move to a town that is truly remarkable.  We continue to travel as much as we can.  After taking our kids & grandkids to Alaska last summer, we will celebrate our 44th anniversary in March by climbing to the top of Diamondhead on Oahu.  We've been to Hawaii several times, but since this will probably be our last trip, we'll cover four islands in 14 days.  Being a retired geologist (thanks to Dr. Raymond Janssen at Marshall), I really enjoy up close & personal views of an active volcano.  On a previous trip, I actually had the hair on my arms singed by being too close to a 1500-degree lava flow on the flanks of Kilauea.  I still spend too much of my time behind a camera when not handling public relations for Kiwanis.  But, what the hey, I'm retired!  Attached are a few pictures I took of our resident bluebirds on our back deck this past weekend.  For the photo enthusiasts, I use a Nikon D300 SLR camera with a 80-400mm Nikon lens."  Dan Nelson.  See Classmate Photos.

Happy Anniversary to Beth and Reid.  Beth Rogers Joyce writes, "It's a cold and icy morning in Pittsburgh. By the way, Reid and I will be celebrating our 45 wedding anniversary tomorrow....yep!  We were married on Groundhog Day! - Feb 2nd."  Beth Rogers Joyce

Bob Raglin Grandchildren.  Go to Classmate Photos for a recent photo of Bob Raglin's grandchildren sent by proud grandpa Bob.  Thanks Bob.

Tom Fife, Son of Sara Williams Alexander.  I talked to Sara Williams Alexander recently and learned that her son, Tom Fife, was the subject of a recent news article in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch.  Tom has a very interesting occupation in the movie industry.  See the following from the Herald-Dispatch.  "Former Barboursville resident, Tom Fife, who is a special effects technician in the movie industry, has an interesting avocation -- collecting World War I information and photographs. Recently, Tom's mother, Sara, lent me a copy of the magazine, Military Images, January/February 2006. Tom wrote the introductory article, African-Americans in the Great War, 1917-19. Throughout the magazine, there are numerous copies of photographs from Tom's collection.  He says that he became interested in the subject in 1997 when he saw a picture of two black soldiers on a French cabinet card. He realized that his knowledge of black Americans in the military was basically limited to what he had learned while he was an extra on the movie, "Glory," so he began researching the topic. This article and photography certainly indicate that Tom is a good researcher and writer. He lives in Fredericksburg, VA"

Joe McVay with Bill Clinton.  Joe McVay had a great evening at the Clinton Rally in January.  See Classmate Photos for a photo of Joe and President Bill Clinton.  Joe says, "I spent 3 hours at a Bill Clinton rally at the local high school (In January, before Super Tuesday).  It was packed and no one left early.  He talked for one hour and took questions for the next hour and half and then worked the line and signed everyone's autograph request.  I asked him a question about Thomas Friedman's views and his book the World is Flat."  Joe McVay

Jim Harper Enjoys Retirement.  Jim says, "As for my activities, I continue to enjoy retirement and as former Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes said 'I am doing plenty of nothing and some days I don't start doing it until about 2:00 pm.' I love it."  Jim Harper

Nancy and Larry are Living Healthy.  Larry and Nancy Necessary Gravely tell me about the many things that they are doing to live healthy lives.  It includes the proper low fat diet, daily supplements of anti-oxidants (with fish oil as a key item), and exercise (with weight loss).  They have both seen great benefits to the heart and brain as a result.  Larry says, “We feel better now than we have in years.”

It's A Small World Says Dan.  Dan Nelson relates, "I am still amazed at how small our world is!  When my parents were born in 1918, there were 103 million people living in the US according to Google.  (NOTE: They were also HHS grads, Class of 1936).  When most of our class members entered this world in 1942, the US population number had increased to 135 million.  Today, there are over 300 million of us!  It's really amazing that old acquaintances can still cross paths with so many other people "milling around" in our way.  Here are a few examples:

1)  When my wife & I retired in 1997, we left New Orleans and moved to Peachtree City, Georgia (about 35 miles SW of downtown Atlanta).  We joined the United Methodist Church and discovered three years later that fellow HHS classmate Bob Stevens and his wife Eileen were also members.  My wife had worked with Eileen as church office volunteers, but I didn't know about Bob's presence.  I didn't find out they lived in Peachtree City until we crossed paths at our 40th HHS reunion!  We now see them almost every Sunday.

2)  In 1998 I joined the Kiwanis Club, which has a membership of about 90 members.  Shortly after joining, one of the existing members who had been out of town came up to me and started asking me several questions about my military background.  He thought he'd recognized me.  To make a long story short, it turns out he was one of my students at Fort Lee, Virginia where, as a lowly 2nd Lieutenant, I was a primary instructor in the 3-month long Petroleum Supply Officer's Course in which he, as a Captain, attended.  And that was in the mid-60's!  We are still friends today.

3)  Two months ago a gentleman visited our club for the first time.  He'd spent 20 years in the military before retiring and taking a teaching position at a local school.  We struck up a conversation about our backgrounds.  To make another long story short it turns out we were both in the same Quartermaster Officer Basic Class at Fort Lee in September, 1964.  He had graduated in ROTC from Wake Forest and me from Marshall.  He joined our club.

4)  Here's another coincidence that really strikes closer to home!  Last week I was talking to a fellow Kiwanian that joined the club about 4 years ago.  Off the wall, he stated that he had worked at BF Goodrich in Ohio with a fellow that he believed had gone to Marshall.  He asked me: "Did you ever meet a guy named Fred Charles?"  Needless to say, I was almost speechless.  I finally said: "As a matter of fact, I get several emails from him every week."

So...there you go.  Is the world really such a small place or is it just coincidence?  Next time you cut someone off in traffic, take a good look at them.  It's possible you may have looked over their shoulder to copy their answers on one of Miss Edith Castleberry's trig tests!

To all our classmates that have recently retired:  Join a local community service organization.  You never know who you might run into!  Dan Nelson

Pat's 51 Ford.  Mark Artis is busy working on a new car for his wife Pat.  He says, “ We already have changed the front end for the look of a 49/50 and just today put an S-10 clip under the front.  It will now have power steering, disc brakes and with the installation, sit 2 1/2 inches lower.  Planning on using a mild NASCAR style of 351 stroker and a 5 speed.  Like I told Pat, ‘Please don't let me make this car go 150...140 will be fine.’  I’m hoping to have it out and running by Spring.  And yes, it will be ‘GenuineTexasThunderRed’.  It’s a fun project that I have needed for a while.  It gets mighty boring building cars for other folks all the time.  We are going to ‘slam dunk’ it.  Everyone here, and anyone that stops by to hang around, is being recruited to do something on it.  NO one is getting a free ride.”  Mark Artis

Mike and Helen Celebrate 45th.  Mike McComas writes, “We're celebrating our 45th anniversary. this weekend with family. Next month we're headed for Estero, Fla. (Gulf side) with youngest daughter and husband to see their new place and revisit Fla.  It's been 20 yrs.”  Mike McComas

Bruce and Judy are Still Working Hard.  Bruce Forinash writes, "Yes, still working. If the health holds up, my wife and I plan to work until mid 2011, then retire. Not sure where to yet, but we are thinking further south, maybe Georgia, or coastal South Carolina. We'll see. In the meantime, I am still at NC State and Judy is a guidance counselor at a Christian school in Raleigh."  Bruce Forinash.

Tom and G.G. Are Keeping Cool In Florida.  Tom Frick writes, “We're in cooler FL.  The temps here have been running less than the Raleigh area...and, adding in the breezes, the weather has been terrific.  August might be a different story though.”  Tom and G.G. Frick

Michael and Virginia Have the Best of Both Worlds.  Michael Pigman tells me, “My bride of one year, Virginia Wiseman (HEHS '64), and I will be spending our summer here in Florida.  Living in Gainesville we are only a little over an hour away from the Atlantic and forty-five minutes from the Gulf. The best of both worlds.   Gasoline here is now $4.09 a gallon. We do plan on visiting Huntington in October.  Our plans are to visit with Vernon and Phyllis Bell.”  Michael Pigman

David is Busy with Counseling Ministries.  “I am very busy with counseling ministries in and out of the country.  I recently spent four days in Guatemala working with a group of missionaries.  In 2009 I'm scheduled to be in Nepal and Costa Rica”.  David Jenkins
