HHS Class Of 1960 45th Class Reunion. The
dates have been selected for our 45th class reunion. Please make a plan to attend
our reunion on the weekend of July 22 and 23, 2005. We expect to see you there.
Good News From John And Donna Underwood. Donna
writes, Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for John. We just left Little
Rock this afternoon with the good news...........his multiple myeloma is, as of now in complete remission!!! We have to be back in Little Rock in a month for the second stem cell transplant to catch any more nasty
little buggers that might be lingering in the blood stream. So, we are ecstatic! Thanks to you all again for the words of encouragement and prayers. The Underwoods
Michael Lerner Is Home And Doing Well. Michael writes, "I have been home for just over 3 wks ( arrived in early April ), and I am doing much
better. I have exceeded the expectations of the neurosurgeon, rehab doc & assorted therapists. Six wks ago I took first
steps on a walker(18 ft). Wed I went over 1000 feet during the day! I've had a 30% increase in strength in my right grip,
fingers in past 2 wks. I'm doing some cooking, taking care of personal grooming, showers, etc. and yes, I typed this. Lots
of mistakes - correcting as I go. I use a walker, not a wheelchair, to go into outpatient therapy, restaurants. Spirits are
high most of the time, but there are some low points--oh boy! Mostly impatience.
I do expect to recover and resume practice limited at first, but full hopefully by fall. Playing tunes on my electronic keyboard. Could fool a lot of people, but right hand still limited. Having fun playing though.
Appreciate your passing this along to the cyberponies. Michael
Buck Is Recovering Well. Buck
Crews recently had heart bi-pass surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington.
According to Mary Lou Eaton Williams, who is a close neighbor, he came through surgery like a champion. After returning home, Mary Lou went over to see him and said "I saw Buck today. He
was sitting on his porch reading. He walked out a ways to meet me as I came up his drive, and I was very pleased with the
way he looked. His color is better; he talked positively and seemed pleased with his progress. He still gets tired easily,
and needed to sit down. Who wouldn't!" Mary Lou
New Cyberpony - G. Anne Varnum McComas. I am happy to announce that G. Anne Varnum McComas has joined the
Cyberponies. She says, It has been a long, long time. I am married to David E. McComas and we have three grown children, a boy and two girls. The "kids" are
now 34, 31 and 26. We have been married 38 years. When we moved from Huntington in 1967 I became known as "Anne". I
have always hated my given name "Garnet Anne" and was happy to change it. I have
been G. Anne McComas for 36 years. I have been a high school teacher in Ohio
and Pennsylvania. After we had the children I became a realtor and was active
in real estate in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Illinois. I earned my salesperson's
license, my broker's license and my GRI.
We now live in California and I am retired. David is still actively working. He went on the manager's training program with Sears as soon as he graduated from
Marshall. We moved many, many times as he came up the corporate ladder. After 25 years with Sears and attaining the position of National Operations Manager in Chicago, David became the President
of the Western Division with Circuit City. Dave is now the CEO of Eye Care Centers
of America, Inc. based in San Antonio Texas. We have homes in San Antonio, Texas
and Laguna Niguel, California. We like to fish, boat, play bridge and travel. Best Regards, Anne
Ed Shaffer's Yacht Club. Ed
Shaffer owns and operates The Yacht Club located on the Ohio River in downtown Huntington. He has docks for 50 boats at his marina near Harris Riverfront Park.
Recently, the building above the Yacht Club was developed into Joe Joe's Waterfront Barge and Grill. This new restaurant caters to the boating crowd but you will find a lot of landlubbers there also enjoying
the food, music, and Huntington on the Ohio River.
Comments From Bill Weaver. "I
didn't know the water was deep enough at Huntington to support a Yacht Club. A
man would have to tack every 30 seconds, and work hard not to run aground at that. Oh
well, it was bound to come. When my Dad showed me the Big Sandy and Ohio Rivers
at Huntington, I said, "Those aren't rivers Daddy. Those are creeks". On the other hand, when I was in New Orleans I just said "Holy Sh--!!".
I think I was right about the sh--, but probably not the Holy." Bill
Comments From Jim Callaway. Coronado, CA, with a population of 25,000 and numerous world-class sailors, has 4 Yacht
Clubs. If Huntington comes up with 4 more, I may consider it for future retirement. If not, I'm stuck in Coronado. Warm regards. Jim
Missing Pony Found. Judy
Browning Clark says, "I found one of our missing classmates recently right here at work. Jerry Hagley is a security guard here at the Museum.
I'll get his address and let you know. Judy
Mr. Paul H. Collins. Karyl
Collins Bodine told me that her "father died as he lived, upbeat and cheerful until 20 minutes before he
died. Then he just went to sleep. He was never in any pain and was a joy! He was 88 and had never been in the hospital until mid-January. Two of my children
and their husbands were with me when he went away and, even though we were very sad, we knew it was time for him to go. The Navy sent 9 people from Jacksonville to do the full military funeral (21 gun salute,
Taps and the presentation of the flag). I know he enjoyed that!!" Karyl
Jim Handloser Poses An Interesting Question. "Could
you think of 10 things aside from family and friends that could lift your spirits?"
Here are Jim's top 10.
(1) "Double Indemnity," the film-noir in which there is this exchange between Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck after
he makes a pass at her: There's a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff, 45 miles an hour.
How fast was I going, Officer? I'd say around 90. Suppose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket. Suppose
I let you off with a warning this time. Suppose it doesn't take. Suppose I have to whack you over the knuckles. Suppose I bust
out crying and put my head on your shoulder. Suppose you try putting it on my
husband's shoulder.
(2) Hitchcock's "Strangers On a Train" or "Rebecca."
(3) Any of the three Rock Hudson/Doris Day movies. They're funny and,
yes, sexist. But the sexism is so over the top, so 1958, that only a person
stubbornly clinging to an ossified ideology would be offended by it in 2004.
(4) The CD "Ella and Louis" (Fitzgerald and Armstrong, of course.)
(5) The 2nd movement of Beethoven's 5th piano concerto. Better still, the complete concerto.
(6) Almost any track from Sinatra's "Songs For Swingin' Lovers"
(7) The Bach/Busoni prelude BWV 645
(8) Count Basie's "The Kid from Red Bank"
(9) The first chapter of "Pride and Prejudice."
(10) Evelyn Waugh's short story "Bella Fleace Gave a Party."

Big Joe McVay Remembers Mother's Day. Here
are Joe McVays comments about his dad. "Today is Mothers Day. I called Big Joe to say hello and see how he was doing, knowing that this is always
a very hard day for him. He asked me if I remembered how every Mothers Day was
the morning we all cooked mothers breakfast, and then served her in bed. I reminded
Big Joe that although we (the children) helped him on Mothers Day, he didnt do that for her just on Mothers Day but on many
more mornings during the year. Big Joe told me that he has such wonderful memories
of his girl on Mothers Day. When we were small, and growing up in Huntington
WV, he said that when we went to church that day he would always be the last one going down the aisle so that he could watch
us follow our mother and see how proud she was to have her children all dressed up in their Sunday finest on her very special
day.
He always wants to give her all the credit for raising us. And he still
says if it werent for your mother . . . . He believes everything that was good about raising the four of us, was because of
his girl. Sally and Susan are taking him to church and then he is going to Mary
Lous graveside, and taking her a dozen pink roses (her favorite color). The people
at the cemetery have put a bench under this beautiful tree beside our mothers grave for Big Joe to have a place to sit ant
talk to his girl. He told me before we hung up how much he loves and misses his
girl. I had a hard time saying good by. Happy Mothers Day. Big
Joe and little joe.
Big Joe --- The Judge And The Paperboy. Joe
McVay tells another story about his dad, Big Joe. "When I was thirteen,
Big Joe encouraged me to get a paper route just as he had when he was a young boy. I was very small thus the name little Joe.
I was so small that I had to have my paper bag that I wore to deliver the papers folded over twice and then sewn so that it
wouldn't drag on the ground. The Sunday paper was too big for me to carry all
of the papers in my bag at one time. So, rather than have to go down 2 blocks
and deliver papers then walk back and get more papers and repeat this two more times, my daddy, Big Joe, would get up every
Sunday at 5:30, no matter what the weather, and would give me a ride to get my papers. Then we would load them in the car
and he would drive around my route and "spot" my papers for me."
"When we finished he would take me downtown to Brackman's Diner and when we walked in everyone in there knew "the judge." Big Joe was a judge in Huntington for four years. It would be around 6:30 am and all
of the people in Brackman's at that hour were bookies, gamblers, illegal "night club" owners and ladies of the evening. Big
Joe grew up with and went to school with the three bookies in town and also the guys who owned or ran the all night joints
where you could always get a drink, shoot craps or play blackjack (we didn't have legal liquor, or gambling). It was just an unwritten rule that about every six months the cops would call and say they were going to
raid the joint (I mean club). They would always have someone different in charge
so that no one got more than one offense every two years. (That way there would be no felony on his record.) Big Joe would always find them guilty, fine them, put them on probation, and tell them with a smile and
a wink of the eye that he didn't want to see them in his court anytime in the next two years......and everyone, cops included,
knew what that meant."
"My brother Jimmy and I were having dinner with Big Joe and I asked him (I try testing him from time to time) if he
remembered when we would go to Brackman's every Sunday morning. Of course not only did he remember but he recalled people
and conversations I had long ago forgotten. So then I asked him if he remembered
why we went there every Sunday???......Are you ready for this? Big Joe said that he thought that he had helped me get a paper
route but he sure didn't think we were getting a paper route, and he would end up being the oldest paperboy still passing
papers at the age 47. I had to get a napkin to add up the years to make sure
he was 47 and, of course, he was. Big Joe's "older: sister Mary Shep Mann celebrated
her 99th birthday may 10th and she told me they were making such a big deal out of it that they must not have thought she
wasn't going to make it to her 100th birthday for a really big party. Mary Shep told them to keep the guest list for next
year. A safe and happy Memorial Day weekend to all". Warm regards, BIG JOE and little joe

News
From Paul Harrison. "I am doing very well and the family is also fine.
Kate has joined corporate America with Imagisitics. With a degree in Marketing. I suggested she try professional selling and that is exactly what she did. Who would have thunk it, she actually listened to her old man. My
son Sean graduates from HS this June and he has pre-enlisted in the Marine Corp's. He
leaves for Paris Island in late July. Not sure how I feel about that but he buys
off on the idea of - The Few, the Proud, The Marines.....
I am very well (just had my annual check up / passed with flying colors).... I always do well on those tests you don't have to study for. Now that Sean is leaving my payroll I am not sure what I will do....thinking about semi - retiring to the
mountains of North Carolina (Boone), maybe next year..... Attached is a picture
of me and two of my sisters....Betty Jane HHS '57 (my Right) and Mary (Poochie) HHS '64 (my L.). Also, a picture of the Old Man himself, all Tuxed Up for a big shindig .

Ellen Sings At Royal Albert Hall.. Mary Ellen Wharton comments about her recent trip. "I went to England last week and sang at Royal Albert Hall with the St. Lucie Chorale, and three choirs
from England. We did the Verdi Requiem.
It was really a wonderful experience. We did all of the other stuff you
are supposed to do like the Tower of London, Westminster Abby, etc. I can ride
the underground without getting lost, and have learned to "mind the gap" when getting off.
It was a great trip. Here is a photo of me with some of our singers, having

now that I am eligible; 62 this month, I have started a new career with the University of Maryland as Director of Ph.D.Organizational
Leadership programs; we have 154 Ph.D. students @ 2 sites in 6 different areas of concentration. Health is great except for potential cancer (under review) and a "stint" in my heart, other than that I
am ready for the next 62"! I am close to catching up academically; all those
years I played golf as opposed to "homework ". Little did I know what I missed
until I went back to read all the classics as I should have in the beginning; Boy do I miss Helen Potts; I wanted her to know
I finally finished her assignments. Harry Please see the University of Maryland

Dr. Harry
Freeman Kelley, Jr. I regret to inform you that one of our classmates, Harry
Kelley, is no longer with us. I talked to his mother, Charlotte Kelley,
this weekend in Huntington. Harry passed away last summer, due to a sudden illness, while on vacation. Mrs. Kelley spoke with happiness as we remembered Harry. She
said that he would often speak of his friends from school when he came to visit. Harry
was training for the Chicago Marathon at the time that he passed away, so he did not have a long illness.
Harry graduated from Marshall University and later obtained his PhD at the
University of Chicago. He was a teacher at the Chicago Institute of Technology
in Political Science. He was also a Consultant to numerous City Governments.
Harry and his family lived in Chicago, Florida, and Fort Wayne, Ind. He and his
wife had four children (2 boys and 2 girls).
Comments
From Harry's Friends.
I always thought Harry was a neat guy.
Some classmates you remember even if you never see them again after graduation.
Harry was one of those. Rebecca Hazelett Killinger.
Sorry to hear this (about Harry).
Ray Chapman.
Our classmates are dying much too quickly! I remember Harry as such
a strong and happy kid. I hope all of his life was like that. Carolyn
Christian Finegar.
Chilling. Linda Frankel.
Was sorry to hear about Harry. He was an ol' buddy from the West End. Larry Clark.
I remember him fondly. What
a loss. Harry Hoffer.
Isn't that sad. I really liked
Harry Kelley. I knew, when he was in Chicago, that he had gotten
his PhD. What a shame. It makes
you wish you had had time to say goodbye! Donna Darbes McGehee.
New Cyberpony
- Don Simpkins. I am happy to announce that Don Simpkins is our latest Cyberpony. Don was in our sophomore class and then moved away.
He lives in Huntington at 238 West 7th Ave. and his e-mail address is wooden-spoon@att.net. Don provided the following history for us.
"I went to HHS in the 1957-1958 school year. Before school started the next
year (58-59), my mother got a job teaching at Man grade school and my dad got one at Man high school. We moved to Man and
stayed that year and then moved back to Huntington for the summer. When it came time for school to start in May of 59, we
moved to Wayne and mom went to Genoa to teach the 5th grade. So I and my brother David, my sister Marilyn all went to Wayne
High in the 59-60 school year and I graduated from Wayne."
"In July of 60, I went into the Air Force for 4 years. I got married to
a girl from Wayne in 62. I got out of service in Aug. of 64 and we moved back to Wayne. In January of 66 I went to work at
Calgon Carbon at Catlettsburg Ky. I just retired from Calgon on April 1 of this year. While I worked at Calgon full time,
I found other things to do as well. I held a Real Estate License for a while, also a license to sell Insurance. I also ran a Motel for about 4 or 5 months. While at Calgon I worked most of the jobs in the operating
department, but bid into the maintenance department and worked as a Mechanic for about 6 years before going into the electrical
department. The last 7 years were spent as an ISO auditor. That is someone who manages a Quality System. We at the plant were
at 95 to 97 percent first time quality with production. I also did all of the safety training for the last 4 years I was at
Calgon."
"Now all I do is play on the computer and cook that is were the "wooden
spoon" comes from." Don Simpkins
New Cyberpony
- Robert Raglin. Bob has also become one of our new computer users joining the Cyberponies. It is great to have Bob in the group. You can reach him at
rjraglin@msn.com. Attached is a very interesting note from Bob regarding his family and his experiences
since high school. Bob and Laura are retired now and live in Columbus, Ohio.
"After high school, I went on active duty with the Marines. Six months of
pure pleasure. My summer was filled with sand, salt and super hot Paris Island day and nights. Needless to say, December finally
came and I returned to Huntington to start Marshall. Two semesters later, I quit school and became part of the labor force
at INCO. My first real job , quality control inspector. My beautiful job ended one year later with layoff due to reduced orders."
"In February 1962, I married Laura McConnell, a very beautiful girl from
Greenup, KY. We have three children, Robert Jr. 41, Roland 40, and Rhonda 31. Robert
Jr. is President of his own company, Roland works in sales in the company, and Rhonda is a communication specialist with Cardinal
Health. Robert has two sons, Roland has two daughters, and Rhonda has no children yet."
"After several 'going nowhere jobs' in Huntington, we moved to Columbus,
Ohio in 1965. I joined GM in September and started what turned out to be a thirty plus years career. I finished college in
1970 and got my first of many promotions at GM. My FIRST SALARY POSITION WAS SUPERVISOR OF PRODUCTION. MY LAST ASSIGNMENT
WAS DEPARTMENT HEAD OVER PRODUCTION CONTROL AND LOGISTICS."
"Today, I spend my time helping the kids and sweeping floors at home - smile!
Laura and I have traveled all over the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico. We are planning a trip this summer to the beach in North
Carolina. We have been going to Long Beach for thirty years with the family. I hope this information will fill in the blanks
for the past years." Bob Raglin

Butch
Austin Gets A Hole In One. Butch has accomplished the impossible a hole in one!
His ace was made on the Number Eleven, Par 3 green at Lavalette Golf Club. When
I talked to Butch about it, he said that he also made two others in 1983, within a week of each other. I suppose that he owes the devil three times now! Congratulations
Butch!
News
From Beckie Hazelett Killinger. "Things here in Akron are great. We just
returned from a three-week vacation in Hawaii, on the Island of Kauai. It was
warm, sunny and peaceful. We had a wonderful relaxing time. The day we returned from vacation, our church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, was one of the six participating
in a confirmation service that has sparked a lot of controversy. We are orthodox
Episcopalians and do not agree with the liberal position taken by the national church in the consecration of Bishop Gene Robinson
in New Hampshire. Anyway, since that day, as counsel for St. Luke's, I have been
fairly busy as you might imagine. We believe God is working to purify the Church
and one day (soon we hope), all the controversy, in all denominations, will be over.
Anyway, that is what we have been doing. Let me know if there are any
class reunion meetings, etc. on the horizon. You remember I volunteered to serve
on any committee when needed. Sincerely, Beckie Hazelett
Carolyn
And Her Dad To Visit Huntington. I'm off to Huntington a week from today. (That would be starting April 26th) I'll take my dad back for the first time since he and Mom left in 1998.
We'll go to our house on West 4th St. and also to our first Huntington house which is way up in the hills of the East End
near some park. We'll eat at Jim's Grill (which Jim always reminds me isn't named that anymore), cruise around
and see all of the sights. We'll have dinner with Pam and Richard McCoy, and I'll hope to see Judy and Nancy S and anyone
else I can find.
I can hardly think of a better place to have grown up. We had the
advantages of a city (anyway, there were restaurants, a library, movie theaters, drive-ins), with the security of a small
town (where everybody knew your name or at least knew someone who knew you). I've not been to many places that are as
pretty as Huntington in the spring, and I didn't even know how unusual it was to have all of those parks within
easy reach. I have good memories of Huntington. Happy Spring! Carolyn Christian Finegar
Proud
Grandparents. Donna Darbes McGehee sent a photo of her grandsons James
11, Ian 9 and Mark 5. She tells me that, They live in Cypress, TX just north
of Houston where our son-in-law has his own business. Susie, our daughter is, of course, a wonderful mom. She doesn't
work outside the home now but has her master's in Occupational Therapy which she practiced before the children came. Pete is retired but looking to open his own consulting business. Our plans are
to move to Houston this fall or late summer. Love and stay in touch, Donna. See Classmate Photos.

New Cyberpony
- Linda Millard Mabe..
Please welcome Linda Millard Mabe to the Cyberponies. Linda
and husband Jim (HHS'58) live in Jacksonville, FL. Linda works part time in Real
Estate and Jim retired from CSX last year after 42 years. They lived previously
in Huntington, Richmond, and Baltimore - all obvious CSX locations. They have
three children - Cathy (42), Beth (40), and Bill (32) and four grandchildren. Their
fifth grandchild is expected in September. Linda tells me "My mom passed away
in Jan 2002. Dad is 85 and still lives in his house in Jacksonville. He walks 2 miles a day and is in great health."
Linda and Jim enjoy travel and have taken several cruises. They have a
condo near Daytona Beach. Linda and Jim are active in their Presbyterian Church
where Linda currently serves on the building committee. They love football and
are big Jacksonville Jaguar fans. Linda's e-mail address is lkmabe@bellsouth.net.
Ray Chapman's Thoughts on Retirement. Retirement is something your parents did, you know? Like being called Mr. Charles
or Mr. Chapman. Officially, I have about 4 years before I can retire with 'full' social security. Realistically,
I work until my wife tells me I can quit. Just kidding. I work at Roche Diagnostics (25 years) as an Industrial
Engineer and still having a ball. I guess I will continue until it ceases to
be fun or I can't contribute like I think I should. After I pull the pin here? I will probably work at the Blood
Bank (driving or what ever they need) or possibly do consulting (Roche has a good program here) for a small management operation.
Still working on details, but I don't think that sitting at home will be an option. You sit, you die. Ray Chapman
Nancy Necessary Gravely is Getting Well. In
December, Nancy had successful surgery for uterine cancer. Her husband Larry
now reports, "She is recovering from surgery and the cancer is gone but the open wound is recalcitrant and is healing slowly.
It looks like it will take a few months to heal but she is doing well. Your good wishes and especially your prayers
would be welcome, many times over. Thanks." Larry.

Lindal Coyle is Now Off the Missing List. Thanks
to Louis and Mary Elam, we have found Lindal Coyle in Florida. He is married to Mary's sister Connie Marcum Coyle (HHS '62). They
live at 200 Country Club Dr., Largo, FL, 33771.
John McDonough Helps Children in Cihautlan, Mexico. Attached is a recent e-mail message from John McDonough, which explains his current
service project in Cihautlan, Mexico. As you can see, John is committed to helping
people, and especially children, who are disadvantaged. If you would consider
joining John in this project, he has given directions for your contributions.
I was thinking about writing you to see if you think that our class might be interested in helping out with a feeding
program that I have in Mexico. Only 33 kids.
I built the kitchen for them 3 years ago and got 33 sponsors to help with the cost of the food. Right now we feed them 1 meal a day, 5 days a week plus3 vitamins a week.
But, recently I discovered that even with this help they are all too fragile.
I think that the tropical worms and parasites are eating most of the food that the kids eat. All of these children are between the ages of 6 and 12. When
I started the program, all of them were eating out of garbage cans. It was a
sight that we do not see here in Los Estados Unitos.
I need to get medical help for these kids. It wouldnt cost much and I
would like to share the wealth with some of our classmates, if you think that some of them would like to help. The town in called Cihautlan(See-What-Lan) and is close to the Pacific in an area called Costalegre (Happy
Coast). It is a breathtaking place to visit.
Few, if any Gringos to spoil the view. Fishing to die for, and poverty
we cannot imagine. For $300, a person visiting can be Bill Gates for a week. Right now, we feed the kids for 1 year for $125 each.
The name of the program is Comedor Para Ninos en Extrema Pobreza (Food for Children in Extreme poverty) and boy is
it extreme. Have you ever seen 3 kids share 1 inch of a hotdog from a garbage
can? Interesting sight!
"Last year, we took them each a 5-inch cheap Wall-Mart doll. It was the
first toy that any of these kids had ever had. You should have seen the look
on their faces. It made all of us cry, except me, of course. All of these kids go to school and one of the teachers told me that she taught 6 of them. She thought that they were retarded until we started feeding them.
Now, 4 of the 6 have A averages and the other 2 have B+. What more can
I say? Those who would like to help, please make the check out to St. Richards
Church (for tax purposes) and send to me at 685 April Sound, Pearl. Mississippi 39208. Thanks." John McDonough

me. I have a great life, very happy. Love flying to far away places. Peace and
Joy." Patty Bentley

Whitten Smith has talked to Louis Ashworth and advises the following. "I saw Louis Ashworth at a basketball game and asked for his e-mail address. He does not
have one. He is retired from the grocery store business and is an assistant pastor. The church is small so they might not
have web access yet. I think I will give him the Cyberponies site and let him see what we have. Maybe that will inspire him to get an e-mail account." Paula

Chari Stevens Singleton Says Business is Good. "Thanks
for tracking me down. I have changed my email address. It is charisingleton@sbcglobal.net. I did not realize
that you did not have it on the HHS address list. The real estate business in
Dallas and North Texas has been improving over the last few months and we are looking forward to a very active spring and
summer. My family and I are doing well. My daughter, son in law and three
fabulous grand children presently live in Newport Beach California. My son, who is an attorney here in Dallas, and his
wife have a three-year-old daughter."
"My Mother will be 93 this July and she continues to live in her home on Washington
Blvd. She oversees the care of my brother who has cerebral palsy. She is pretty amazing. During our last
reunion several people dropped by to see her which she truly enjoyed. She entertained everyone by turning on the lights
on her artificial Christmas Tree that has remained in the entry hall for over 20 years. All my best." See Chari's photograph on Classmate Photos.

Success in Horse Racing. Bill
Weaver has written advising that his son, George, won the Gotham Stakes recently with Saratoga County. This horse may be a possible entry in the Kentucky Derby this year. George is a talented horse trainer who incorporated as George Weaver Racing, Inc. in 2002. Bill and Billy are very proud parents and are looking forward to their son's first start in the Derby.
Bill says, "In one
of the major preps for the Derby, George scored an ace. Please share this with
classmates whom you may think are interested in horseracing. George is planning
to run him in the Lexington Stakes next, if he is in good shape in the next week. Maybe
we will get to see him this year after all."

Michael Lerner is Improving. Michael's
wife Susan writes, "Michael continues to make gains. He has been in the rehab hospital for three weeks. It was
just over four weeks ago he had emergency surgery and was told he might be a quadriplegic for life. His left arm and
leg are gaining significant strength and range of motion. He is able to stand with the support of his walker for very
brief moments. He is starting
to move his right hand and fingers. He is able to sit up with great effort in his bed. We are ecstatic that he
has made this much progress. He is struggling with the side effect of some of his meds and has many challenges ahead.
But we are grateful for everything he has regained."
"Hopefully in three or four weeks, he will be home and able to tell you his story. Until then thank you for your support and prayers.
Please forward this news
to all his classmates." Thanks, Susan
Up-Date on John Underwood's Treatment. The following message is from Donna Underwood.
"Friends, Just a quick update on what's going on with John's treatment. The first round of drugs did not work, so within the next 10 days they want him to
start heavy-duty chemotherapy in preparation for a double stem cell transplant. Since
our insurance company won't pay for his treatment at Little Rock, the best treatment center in this country, he will have
to seek treatment at another.......right now it looks like it will be at the University Hospital in Morgantown, WV. The docs in Little Rock that we've been seeing called there and they think the hospital will do the treatment
under their supervision. Its sad that one has to deal with this insurance issue
when they are so sick. Bet if the top dogs in charge of the insurance had Multiple
Myeloma, they'd find a way to get treated at the University of Arkansas. Needless
to say, we are very frustrated and bitter."
"We'll be leaving Chillicothe on Tuesday (Feb. 24th) and heading to our apartment in Huntington. Imagine we'll be spending most of the time in another apartment in Morgantown as it looks like the adriamyacin
is a 24 hour drip as is another. So, that looks like JLU will be in the hospital
there." Donna

Big Joe McVay Goes to the Hospital. On
February, 29th, Joe McVays dad was rushed to the hospital with a suspected heart attach. Fortunately, it was determined that it was angina and there was no heart damage. Mr. McVay is 95 years old and the has the sharpest wit known.
Here are some of the comments that he made during the ordeal.
When daughter Sally called
911 they always send an ambulance and a fire truck. So as they were taking BIG
JOE out on a stretcher, he looked over at Sally and said that she shouldn't have told 911 that the house was burning down.
When he was told that he was
going to move out of CCU to another room, his only concern was if he was going to get the same meals!!
When asked what he would like from home, he said Please bring my check book.
Im going to need it to get out of this place.
He told his granddaughter
Ashley that they should have sent a band to the house. When she asked him why, he said everything else had come..a
fire truck, ambulance, police and all the neighbors so they might as well have sent a band.
The day Big Joe was taken
to the hospital, his great granddaughter Sutton said that he was going to be fine. When
questioned, she said that Big Joe told her that he was going to live to be 100 so that she could see him on the morning TV
show.
Mr. McVay says that it was
a very scary experience for him and that he was glad to be back home. He wants
to thank all who sent him cards and e-mails. He is very thankful to know how
many people were concerned about him. He received a total of 71 e-mails and 14
get well cards. Joe says On behalf of all of the McVays, we sincerely thank everyone
for their kind and caring words to Big Joe."

Connie
Heads University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Dr. Constance Ewing Cook has served as Director of CRLT since 1993. Prior to becoming Director of CRLT, Dr. Cook served as Executive Assistant to the
President of the University of Michigan, with responsibility for being the liaison between the President and the faculty governing
bodies, coordinating interactions among the executive officers, and representing the President on key university committees. From 1987-1990, Connie was coordinator of the FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary
Education) Comprehensive Program at the U.S. Department of Education. Connie
also was an associate professor at Albion College, where she chaired the political science department. She received her B.A. from Barnard College, her M.A. from The Pennsylvania State University, and her Ph.D.
from Boston University, all in political science. Her expertise concerns American political interest groups, which is the
topic of her two books: Lobbying for Higher Education: How Colleges and Universities Influence Federal Policy, and
Nuclear Power and Legal Advocacy: The Environmentalists and the Courts.
As Director, Connie coordinates new initiatives at CRLT and represents both CRLT and the broader University community
on issues of teaching and learning. Connie is also associate professor of higher
education at the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, as well as adjunct associate professor of political
science. Connie tells me that "CRLT was actually the first university teaching
center in the country - established in 1962 to help faculty and graduate student instructors improve teaching on our campus. As director, my role is to figure out how to enhance the culture of teaching at this
research university. This goal fits perfectly with my own values." You can learn more about CRLT at the following websites: http://www.crlt.umich.edu/aboutcrlt/crltstaff.html http://www.crlt.umich.edu>http://www.crlt.umich.edu.
Connie has been married to Jim Cook, also from Huntington, for 41 years. Jim's
family operated Cook Hardware on 4th Avenue. Connie says, "Jim recently retired
from CMS Energy Corporation, where he was senior vice president. He now devotes
time to leadership roles in Ann Arbor's non-profit organizations. Although he is a tennis and golf enthusiast, he is good
enough to stay in Ann Arbor with me and cope with the winters. And we also manage
to travel a lot together. We have two children: Jay is a professor here at the
University of Michigan (as is his wife), and Amy is a social worker placing foster children in adoptive homes in northern
Michigan." About retirement,
Connie comments, "You asked how long I plan to work, and the truth is that I have not even begun to think about retirement.
I am blessed with a job that lets me interact with people I respect and enjoy, and the work itself is wonderfully challenging
and interesting." See Connies photo on Classmate Photos.
George
Barr - Huntington Billboard. Dan
Nelson provided the following information last year. "I was in Huntington
last week visiting my sister who recently had back surgery. Driving around in
the cold & snow, I spotted a full-size billboard on 14th Street West & Adams Avenue with a very large picture of George
Barr, complete with handlebar mustache. The sign read something like
this: "George Barr would have been 60 years old on December 24, 2002 if he hadn't been killed by a drunk
driver in 1996. Sadly missed by his family & friends." That was quite a surprise! You can see George's billboard on

for all of the updates on everyone. It is nice to hear about some of the ole
classmates and try and put a face with a name. We have been very busy here. The
building season is in full swing and we are swamped with work. Building 5 or 6 new cars for next season and working on our
own car to get it freshened up and ready. The closest race to Charlotte this season will be in Sept 17/18/19 for a PRO race
in Atlanta. I don't know which car will make that trip...it seems that the sanctioning bodies have a war going on and have
scheduled 4 dates on top of each other. We may have to be in Columbus, Ohio for the NSCA World finals....depending on the
point situation. You can catch up a bit on our type of racing by checking out
our website and also the Texas Outsiders site. Schedules and pictures are posted and we will be updating on special events
also. We will hold 4 of our own races this season and are working on a $40,000 contingency package for that."

Staten Lowery - Cabell County Schools. Linda tells me "I have been
employed with Cabell County Schools since 1978 and am currently in the position of Executive Secretary in Federal Programs
at our Central Office which is now located in the old East High School building. I
am planning on retiring in January or June of 2005. I am the mother of twins

are presently married or have children of their own - sadly to say, I still am not a grandmother which I am praying will one

Retirement
Living on Long Island. Jim Handloser says "This is our second year living
full time in Sagaponack. It began as an experiment to find out if we'd miss living in New York City. Turns out, we like being out here all the time. We still spend a couple of days in the City every few weeks, but only during the colder months.
Except for infrequent trips to Yankee Stadium, we almost never go into the City during the summer. We love NYC and will always consider ourselves New Yorkers. We'll never stay away from the City for very
long, but this Hamptons life does seem to suit us." Jim offers the following
regarding retirement. "Re your upcoming retirement, fair warning from an old
hand at that life: the hours will seem to fly by at the speed of sound. The good news is that every one of those hours will
be yours, not anyone else's. Perhaps that's why I've never had a wistful thought about my working life since the day I decided
to leave it." Jim

Tallahassee, FL 32303 phone 850 562 2071. My new e-mail address is phelpsn@comcast.net.
My husband is Jerry Phelps who is a Director at the Fla. Bar (what lawyers have to join - not where you drink!). We
have raised three sons. The oldest has become heavily involved in Russian commerce
and married a Russian girl last summer. The second one is in Atlanta, about to be married and is also in the computer world.
The third one is here in Tallahassee waiting for his wife to complete her Biochem PhD program at FSU. They have produced two grandchildren for us.
My husband and I are BIG Seminole fans but did manage to swallow our pride to go down to the Un. of Fla. stadium a
couple of years ago when Marshall played the Gators. There are SOOO many MU grads down here.
Since I no longer have family in Huntington, it has been a long time since we have been up there. So I
Do appreciate the communication from you. I spent some time today looking
over the pictures from the reunion. Who in the world are all those old looking people with gray hair!! Seriously, it was wonderful
to see so many old familiar faces and it made me want to come to the next reunion."

New Cyberpony Ted Booth. Please
welcome Ted to our group. Ted is now retired and lives in Lewisburg, WV with his wife Irmgard.
He met Irmgard in Germany and they were married in Thailand (while he was in Vietnam).
They have been married 37 years. Ted and Irmgard built a home in Lewisburg
and are renovating a log home which was built by Ted's parents on the Greenbrier River.
They also maintain a residence in Alexandria, VA.
They have two sons Christopher (31) and Alexander (27).
Irmgard was an OR nurse for 20 years and later she owned and operated a business in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
Christopher, is an Army Officer practicing law in Nashville, TN. Alexander, is
multilingual, and teaches English as a second language, and is also a writer. He
lives in Berlin, Germany.
Ted's career includes 5 years as an Army officer and 26 years in the FBI. In Ted's words, "After Marshall, I was an Army officer for five years.
I commanded a special Forces "A" team, Mechanized Infantry, and Armor companies in Germany, and an Airborne rifle company
in Vietnam along with staff positions and a tour as a Ranger instructor in the Infantry School. After the Army we joined the FBI and served 26 years as a counterintelligence officer with assignments
in New Orleans, Baltimore, Washington, and Bonn, Germany. While working, I earned
two degrees at night from Johns Hopkins and later attended the National War College for a year. I was detailed to the Surveys & Investigations Staff of the House Appropriations Committee in 1990. There we traveled around the world working military and intelligence issues until I retired in Sept. 02.
Ted's comments on retirement. "In 1978
my parents built a log house on the Greenbrier River and this is how we came to know Lewisburg. The landscape is similar to
where my wife grew up in Germany and I wanted to be closer to my immediate family, who live in the Huntington area. I will admit it is quite a change from the big city. We enjoy
the slower pace but not necessarily when we need maintenance people! We now have
time for family and friends. We walk, read, work out, travel, attend local theater
and concerts, garden and try to keep up with a 3.3 - acre lawn. The past year, we have been renovating the log house. My big fear prior to retirement was whether I could stay busy here. The reality is I do not know how I had time to work before." Ted's
e-mail address is tibooth@hotmail.com/.
New Cyberpony Bill Roberts. Please
welcome Dr. William Roberts to the Cyberponies. His e-mail address is
wwr@virginia.edu/. Bill is Commonwealth Professor of Engineering and Director of Mathematical - Computational Modeling Laboratory,
University of Virginia. His professional work spans a broad realm of phenomena
observed in nature such as shock waves, nonlinear phenomena, hypersonic flows, gas-fiber transport, industrial prototype technologies,
and star formation. His strong focus is on formulation of the scientific and
engineering problems in mathematical terms and solution of the mathematical equations in the models formulated. Bill's current research efforts are on fibrous assemblies (micro- and nano- levels).
Bill and his wife Linda live in Charlottesville, VA.
They met on a blind date in college at MIT. They have been married 36-1/2
years. Linda is a licensed CPA and works at a Charlottesville law firm where
she helps clients with their taxes, trusts, and estates. Bill and Linda have
raised two sons (Will, 33 and Dave, 30). Will is a medical doctor, surgeon and
assistant professor. Dave is a mechanical engineering Ph.D. and a systems engineering
manager. Bill and Linda have 3 grandchildren.
Bill has received numerous awards during his teaching career including the Distinguished Teaching Award, University
of Va. Office of Afro-Am. Affairs; the NCR Stakeholder's Innovation Award; and nomination as Virginia's Outstanding Scientist
(1991).
Bill
and Linda are both active in their Peace Lutheran Church. Linda is on the church
council and Bill serves as an Assisting Minister. Bill has been an Indian Guides
Chief, youth ice hockey coach, youth soccer coach, and leader of their community soccer organization. He initiated and organized the soccer traveling team program and coached the team until the boys reached
high school. Bill says. "In thinking back, I can remember the fun that both of
our sons had in their youth soccer experiences. It is clear that the youth soccer
made it possible for both of them to be able to go on to play high school soccer on their high school varsity soccer teams
and to play on their varsity soccer teams in college. I also recognize that they both learned a great deal from the
competitiveness and the discipline required of the traveling team youth soccer, which carried over outside soccer, through
their high school studies." Please see Classmate Photos for Bill's photo at work at The University of Virginia.

Big Joe and Little Joe. Joe McVay has written another
very interesting story about his dad, Big Joe, recently. Joe writes:
"We
had all gathered at my sister Susan's home for Thanksgiving, and we were sitting around in the kitchen when someone asked,
'Who likes Greek food?' When his turn came, Big Joe said, 'I love Greek food,
I am a Greek.' Someone thought Big Joe had become confused so they reminded him
that the name McVay was Scotch-Irish. Big Joe said, ......(Are you ready for
this?) 'I have been Greek since 1927. That
was my freshman year at Washington and Lee and that was the year that I joined a Greek fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega (ATO).' Big Joe went on to tell us that ATO stood for Awful Tough Outfit. When I asked him if it was his fraternity that got put on probation for staling the C&O train at the
station and taking it to the next town, he assured all of us, with a big smile on his face and a wink, that it didn't happen
while he was there........The records seem to disagree." Joe
Sharon and Roger Ray write that they have spoken recently to Mary Evelyn Taylor Brooks
recently and that she is doing well in Florida.
Bill Weaver Works to Keep Our Park Streams Clean and Healthy. Bill
writes, "Sprawl continues, and many parks are standing in the way. Developments
cause run off that kills fishing lakes and ponds. We do biomonitoring and help
to control encroachment. I am doing some work for the Parks Department now in
addition to my regular effluent testing. Keeps me busy. Billie and I have fun going out on these park assignments on the weekend.
The parks are a greater challenge than I had thought they would be. I'm
afraid the idea of set asides is a little shallow. We penetrate all of our environment,
and all of our environment penetrates us." Bill and Billie Weaver own and operate
Marine Testing, Ltd., a small corporation dealing with ecological services.
John East writes that he is back to work after his long illness.
He is working for a small builder setting up budgets, estimating, and scheduling for single-family homes. He is looking for a more permanent position and has applied for one in West Virginia. He sends his regards to everyone from sunny Naples, Florida.

we don't have to camp any more. I am attaching some pictures." Jim. See Classmate Photographs.
Bob Stevens writes that he and Eileen are continuing to enjoy retirement. They play golf at least 4 times a week near their home in Peachtree City, GA. They are planning a 3-week vacation trip to Thailand.
Larry and Dee Travel to the Smokeys. Larry Clark
writes, "Dee, my mom, Susie (our Bichon) and I went to the Smoky's for Winterfest
for four days. We rented a cabin. We
saw 'Country Tonight' and Louise Mandrell Christmas shows, had some good food and browsed the shops. We almost got snowed in. The cabin was on a pretty steep hill. Fortunately the sun came out around 11 and it melted enough to get down the hill!"
