grandson.
New Cyberpony –
Judee McCorkle Jerabek. Another new Cyberpony is Judee McCorkle Jerabek. Judee and her husband Bruce have recently retired and moved to Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. Turtle
Lake is about 50 miles northeast of Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. Judee and Bruce have 7 children and 11 grandchildren (expecting
# 12 in July). She told me that she transferred to HHS, from St. Joe, for her senior year. She was recruited by
Stan Maynard and Bob Barrett when meeting them at the Riverside swimming pool. Stan
and Bob always had a good eye for talent - not always for basketball fortunately. You
can e-mail Judee at jjerabeck@centurytel.net.
New Cyberpony – Dr. Jo Pitser Perry. Cyberpony Jo Pitser Perry now lives in Middletown, Virginia. Jo tells me that she is enjoying teaching Microbiology
part time. She also said that the 5" of snow that they got this winter is really nothing compared to the snows that
they got in Connecticut. Life is great in Virginia. Her e-mail address is jopetty64@yahoo.com.
New Cyberpony – Carolyn Russell Adkins.
Please welcome Carolyn Russell Adkins to the Cyberponies. She and her husband Gary live in Richardson,
Texas. Carolyn’s e-mail is fcadkins@comcast.net.
John Joseph Horan Jr. I am sorry to announce the passing of one of our HHS 1960 classmates - John Horan. JOHN J. HORAN JR., 63, of Kenova died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in
St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Rollins
Funeral Home, Kenova, W.Va., with the Rev. Henry Mahan officiating. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
He was born May 1, 1941, a son of the late John J. Sr. and Helen Reed Horan. He was retired from Calgon Corporation and a
member of 13th Street Baptist Church in Ashland, KY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lois
Stacy. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Billings Horan; two sons and daughters-in-law, John T. and Michelle Horan of Huntington
and Joe and Billie Horan of Kenova; two grandsons, Jamie and Mikie Horan, both of Kenova; one sister, Joan Shepherd of Huntington;
two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Donna Horan of Galloway, W.Va., and Alfred and Doris Horan of South Point, Ohio;
and one sister-in-law, Judy Billings of Kenova.
Earl Johnson Grizzel. I was informed,
by his son William, that Earl Grizzel passed away in 1993. He died of lung cancer.
He had worked at General Motors Fisher Body Tool and Die in Columbus, Ohio.
Judith Anne Herget Marcum. I am sorry
to inform you that another one of our classmates has deceased recently – Judy Herget Marcum.
Judy was a student with us in her sophomore year. She went on to complete high school at Huntington East High School.
JUDITH ANNE MARCUM, 62, of Fairfield, Ohio, died Sunday, January
23, 2005, at University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005, at Klingel Carpenter
Mortuary, with interment following at Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born July 31, 1942, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter
of the late John and Mary Jane Herget. She is survived by her sons, John David Marcum and Todd Allen (Leandra) Marcum; two
grandchildren, Nathaniel and Nicholas Marcum. She was the niece of Jean Lou Alesworth and Kenny (Janet) Marple and cousin
to Lois Wilson and Catherine Parker, along with numerous other relatives.
Remembering Judy Herget Marcum. Classmates
write about their friend Judy Herget Marcum.
“I was so sorry to hear about Judy Herget. She was a pretty close friend until she moved.
However, I did see her from time to time. I heard about her illness in early January and I called her.
She was in good spirits, but told me she was very ill. I can't remember exactly what was wrong but I think it was some
form of cancer. She was thrilled that I had called and I asked her about coming to the reunion of HHS as well as
HES. She said if all went well she was going to try to come to both this summer. She was in such
good spirits that I just knew she would be OK for some time to come. I am very surprised to see
she died.” Sharon Roach Ray.
“I wanted to respond to your request for information about Judy Marcum. Judy grew
up on the Southside of Huntington, attending Miller Elementary and Cammack Jr. High Schools. After her sophomore year
at HHS, she moved to Norway Avenue and began attending HEHS. A close friend from HEHS, Vicky Miller Stone,
has been very supportive of Judy during her hospitalizations and has assisted her sons through this emotional period.
HHS class members may know Vicky also. She recently retired as an elementary teacher for many years at Cammack. Judy was a member of the First United Methodist Church as a young girl. She
was always present for Sunday School, choir, and the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Her faith was very important to her.
I first met Judy at church and we continued our friendship through our adult years.
Judy was married to Bruce Marcum, and they have been divorced for a number of years. Bruce worked
behind the scenes for the MU Athletic Dept. and is now retired living in Huntington. Judy moved to Cincinnati for
employment reasons. About a year ago she was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. A cause could not be determined.
She seemed to be getting better until last Fall. She became weaker and was not strong enough for a liver transplant. Judy is survived by her two sons, John David and Todd, who live in Cincinnati.
Todd is married and has two sons. Judy's aunt, Jean Lou Aylesworth, lives in Huntington. Her uncle, Kenneth
Marple, and wife, Janet, live in Lexington, KY. She has several cousins living in Huntington and KY.” Pamela Adkins McCoy
“I believe that Judy graduated from HEHS in
1960. Since I started to HEHS as a sophomore, I attended the 2000 HEHS reunion
and Judy was there. I enjoyed talking to her because she started to HHS and graduated
from HEHS and I did the opposite. She was a very nice lady! Bob Harris.

Larry Advises “Live While You Can”. Larry Osborne writes, “This has been an eventful year so far
to say the least. Yes, I did have a triple bypass Feb. 3 and it came as a complete surprise. I've been
having rotator cuff problems for a few months and was scheduled to go in for shoulder surgery pending a medical release from
my primary care doctor. My primary doctor insisted that I take a tress test before he signed the release. I
took and completed the test including the speed increases and elevations. I had no shortness of breath or chest
pains and was getting ready to leave when the doctor came in and told me the results where abnormal. I told him
that there must be some mistake because I felt fine. He then scheduled me for a cardiac catherization which found
at least two blockages. So they scheduled and performed the triple the next day. I
had never had any shortness of breath, chest pains or any other symptoms. I've never had a heart attach so the
heart muscle is healthy with no scar tissue. I have been a good walker for years taking our yellow lab out for a mile
or two every day for the past two years. I feel great and am looking for a full recovery. Again, I feel
good but think there are easier ways to loose weight. I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming reunion and
would say to anyone thinking of passing and waiting until the next, live while you can.”
Larry Osborne
Jim Agrees With Larry. Jim Callaway says,
after reading about Larry Osborne, “One of the best letters you have passed along! I often say
I'm not sure of the question, but I know the answer is exercise! I guess I'm lucky I'm addicted to exercise and have
a wife that thinks a Marathon is fun, especially if it is in London, Hawaii or Paris. I won my age group in the recent
San Diego Super Bowl 5K. As I get deeper into the 60-65 age group there are some 60-year old guys nipping at my heels.
Warm regards,” Jim Callaway

Snowball Dance Queen, Betty Sue Haden Kinzer, and her Attendants Helen Darby Moore, Ila Lee Stewart
Drown, and Mary Harvey Wilson Midkiff. See Classmate Photos –

Bill Weaver’s Son George Wins Big Race. Bill advises, “George won the Grade One Dubai Golden Shaheen with a purse of
$2 million. This will place George in the top ten trainers in the country by earnings. However, his Kentucky Derby
hopefuls are still very iffy. Drum Major got his blood count up, and is running well, but will have to win a big prep
with a large purse to get into the field this late. The other horse has not had the speed necessary for this level of
competition.” See Classmate Photos for Bill at the racetrack.
Artemis Valavanis Wilhour's Mother Remembered. DESPINA A. VALAVANIS, 91, of Charleston, WV. Passed away recently. Please join me in remembering Artemis and her mother at this time.
Frederick Hotel Rebirth. Please see
the interesting article from the Herald-Dispatch about the rebirth of the Frederick Hotel. The planned opening will
be in time for visits while attending our class reunion weekend. http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2005/February/03/LNtop2.htm

Classmate Photos. See new photos
of Davis Biggs, Alfreda Corradi Leef, Don Carnohan, Judy Browning Clark, Darby Moore, Margie Fox Hale, Susan Chetwin
Brandon, and Pam Morelock Rawn at Classmate Photos.
Teacher Bob Berry. George Hale writes “You all remember Mr. Berry don't you? It's his fault I became a biology
teacher. Bob has been my
lifelong mentor. I see him whenever possible. We have been in contact all these years. Bob and Karen, his wife, joined Judy
Clark and myself for dinner at Marshall's Cafe. It had been 8 years since I last saw him. I will be visiting
him more often now as he is moving along in years. Bob is a WWII veteran which I think few people know. He served in
the Pacific Theatre in the Army. He retired early due to heart trouble. I think he has lived much longer than the doctors
thought he might. He is in his early 80s.” George Hale. See Bob and George at Classmate Photos.
Judy Breaks Her Hand. I recently
learned that Judy Browning Clark broke her hand. This is has put her keyboarding activities on
a slow track. She is getting along OK and looking forward to getting full use of her hand.
George Ends His Short Retirement. “Well, so much for retirement for the
time being. I have taken a position as a lab instructor at the University of West Georgia. They are considering me for a position
as permanent staff. Oh well. They sought me out. I didn't even apply.” George
Hale
Happy Birthday Michael. Michael
Lerner writes, “This week is a special time for me. I'M CELEBRATING
MY 62ND BIRTHDAY! Last February I didn't know for sure I'd have another birthday,
and I have so much to be grateful for. To bring the "ponies" up to date, my formal
therapy ended in October, and I joined a YMCA branch 5 min. from my home where I workout 3X a week. I was cleared to drive (use my left foot) in October and am like a 16 yr old who just got his license! I'm back to doing "chores" like doing grocery shopping and things around the house. My therapist wanted me to be "pressing" 30 lbs, and I'm now pressing 70! I'm doing 14-16 min ( in 3 increments) on an elliptical trainer, and we just got a new treadmill and did
12 min. @ 1.4 mph which I'm excited about. My neurosurgeon doubted that I'd ever
walk again, and I now walk without any crutch, cane, etc. around the house. Next Monday I see him and hope to walk the long
hall in his office without a cane. It is my hope to resume some dental practice
in February/March. The osteopathic doctor who has been treating me since I became
sick is only seeing me once a week (was 3X a week back then). Keep having one
small victory after another. Glass is 85% full!!........means it's still 15%
empty but working on that. My oldest son, Neil, a professor of music @ Davidson
College near Charlotte became engaged this summer, and my daughter Shayna and her husband Seth are expecting their first child
in May. We hope to travel this year; accumulated
enough miles to get tickets to Europe, and when I can walk better, we want to go. I
feel like George Bailey in the Capra movie "It's a Wonderful Life" getting another chance at life, and I'm enthusiastic about
2005 even with all of the challenges I face and we all face. Michael Lerner.

Huntington High School Class of 1927. Pat Richardson Adkins recently found a web site, during her genealogy
studies, that will be interesting to you. It is the "Tatler" Yearbook from the Huntington High School Class of 1927. http://www.genealogybuff.com/wv/wv-huntington/.
In this yearbook you will find photos of teachers: Miss. Elizabeth M.
Koletka - History (Marshall College); Miss. Adalaide J. Russell - Sewing (Penn State College, Columbia
Univ.); Miss. Mae Newman - Mathematics (West Virginia University); and student: Miss. Boyce Yarbrough. You will also find some of your relatives and possibly parents. Common surnames

the HHS school alumni web site for the Class of 1927. See: http://hhs.cabe.k12.wv.us/alumni.htm.
Tweel Family History - "Tatler" Yearbook HHS Class of 1927. John
Tweel and Betty Tweel Rahal have provided some Tweel family history as a result of seeing family members in
the 1927 HHS Yearbook. The Tweel family has been a very important part of Huntington for over a century! Thanks John and Betty.
From John: "Thanks for
sharing that 1927 Tatler HHS web site. Very interesting. Here’s a little background about the 2 Tweel’s on page
72. Leonard Tweel was Betty Tweel Rahal's father and also a brother of Jim Tweel
(Jims Grill). Thelma Tweel became Thelma Tweel Cassis, one of my Aunts. She was Joe and Charlie Cassis' mother and a sister
of Charles Tweel (Yellow Cab) and my father Samuel (who was born in Huntington in 1908). There were 6 children in Leonard's
family and 7 in Samuel's."
From Betty: "Leonard and Samuel were third cousins (or first cousins twice removed, if you prefer.) So
that makes John and me fifth cousins."
